ITN World News began life as ITN Super Channel News, a newscast for the then-newly formed pan-European satellite channel, The Super Channel. The newscast began broadcasting in 1987, and its main broadcast was shown live at 9PM G. M. T. (10PM C. E. T.). Its main presenters were John Suchet, Sue Carpenter, and David Cass. In 1988, ITN began producing an hour-long newscast called ITN Morning News, and was broadcast from London, at 5AM G. M. T., preceding TV-AM Good Morning Britain. It was shown on the stations of the ITV Network. Part of this newscast - shown about half-way through the programme - included a domestic version of Super Channel News, entitled ITN World News. The programme was presented by the presenters of the version shown on The Super Channel. Trevor McDonald would also later present this programme, before going on to become the head newscaster of ITN News At Ten. Edward Hourton also presented occasionally. After the Gulf War, ITN World News was no longer shown as part of the morning newscast - the newscast itself was halved and broadcast at 5.30AM G. M. T.

In 1993, The Super Channel was bought by American company, General Electric. The company was (and is) best known for being the owners of NBC Television in the United States. Firstly, The Super Channel was renamed NBC Super Channel. Secondly, many popular programmes from NBC began appearing on the channel - comedy programmes from NBC included The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, Late Night With Conan O'Brien, and Saturday Night Live; news programmes from NBC included Dateline NBC, The Today Show, and NBC Nightly News With Tom Brokaw. Business and financial news was provided by CNBC and The Financial Times. And thirdly, ITN Super Channel News changed its name to ITN World News to reflect The Super Channel's takeover. News programmes from NBC were recorded (although NBC Nightly News was live), and so updates had to come from ITN in London. Also at this time, ITN World News expanded to an hour, still in its timeslot of 9PM G. M. T. (10PM C. E. T.). In 1996, NBC Super Channel became NBC Europe; in 1998 NBC Europe ceased broadcasting when it didn't make it over to digital television. ITN World News ceased broadcasting in the United Kingdom on the day of the channel's final broadcast. Towards it final years, its presenters were Katy Haswell and Richard Bath.

In 1998, ITN made a deal with WNET New York City for a newer version of the newscast to be broadcast from London for the Public Broadcasting Service across the United States. It made its debut on November 2, with a new set, new music, and a new presenter - Daljit Dhaliwal. The name of the new incarnation of the broadcast was ITN World News For Public Television. Although it made Daljit Dhaliwal a household name in the United States, the broadcast was cancelled again after nearly a year, due to funding. The newscast was replaced with a simulcast of BBC World News, which is still shown today.

It was broadcast usually at either 6AM or 6.30AM (usually A. E. T.). During the late-nineties, the World News broadcasts were phased out, being replaced with either an edition of CNN World News or by national newscasts from Network Nine.
