Jangle pop

Jangle Pop è la corrente americana del movimento post-punk dei metà anni ottanta che segnò il ritorno delle melodie pop degli anni sessanta. Iniziato dai neonati R.E.M., il jangle pop conservava anche tratti di folk-rock, ma rimaneva di base un genere dalla struttura pop. Il jangle pop non era un genere nel mainstream, i testi erano spesso deliberatamente critici e le sonorità erano solitamente grezze e fai da te. Il periodo di maggior successo del genere fu tra il 1984 e il 1987. Vi erano le southern pop band come R.E.M. e Let's Active, e le Paisley underground band della West Coast che erano più influenzate dallo Psychedelic rock, e altre band sparse per il Midwest. Nei tardi anni ottanta, il genere cominciò a declinare, principalmente perché erano molteplici le band dalle sonorità simili ed erano quindi indistinguibili l'una dall'altra.
I R.E.M. entrarono nel mainstream, ed infatti, diventarono una delle band più popolari al mondo.
