Gli Of Montreal sono una band formata da Kevin Barnes, un ragazzo di Athens in Georgia.

All'inizio a dire il vero la band contava un unico elemento, cioè Barnes, che se ne andava in giro per l'America a proporre alcuni pezzi scritti da lui e registrati alla buona con l'aiuto di qualche amico di passaggio. Dopo qualche tempo, e molte porte battute in faccia, Barnes torna ad Athens e lì ritrova un vecchio amico di infanzia (Julian Kostner) molto informato sulla scena musicale della città e menbro del collettivo Elephant Six. All'interno di questo collettivo Barnes incontra Derek Almstead e Bryan (Poole) Helium che diventano di li a poco rispettivamente batterista e bassista degli Of Montreal. Insieme pubblicano i primi tre album: Cherry Peel, The Bird Who Continues to Eat the Rabbit's Flower e The Bedside Drama: A Petite Tragedy.

Col tempo si uniscono alla band altri membri tra cui Dottie Alexander e Jamey Huggins e nascono così altri 5 album tra cui l'ultimo Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? pubblicato nel Gennaio 2007.
