J-Cart
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The J-Cart was a special cartridge developed by Codemasters for the Sega Mega Drive/Sega Genesis console, and increased Sega's 16-bit console from two joypad ports to four.
The other alternatives, (EA's 4 Way Play and the official Sega Multitap) required the purchase of an external accessory and were not compatible with each other; most games were developed for use exclusively by one system or the other. However, after legal battles, and with EA's permission, Sega released the Sega Team Tap that featured compatibility with both types and other special controllers. Codemasters' special cartridge was advantageous as it had the two extra joypad sockets built in.
This effectively allowed four players to play simultaneously without any adapters or workarounds. Micro Machines also allowed up to eight players to play using up to four gamepads, each player using only the D-Pad or trigger buttons.
The J-Cart didn't have had great success since it came relatively late in the life cycle of the Mega Drive/Genesis. Thus the number of games that support the J-Cart is pretty small and all of them came from Codemasters.
