J. H. Cutler is a firm of Bespoke Tailor & Shirt Makers, based in Sydney, Australia
Situated in the heart of Sydney’s CBD J. H. Cutler, one of Australia’s great tailors, has provided bespoke tailoring and shirt making services to discerning gentlemen throughout Australia and across the world for over 120 years.
Throughout this time leading identities from Federal and State politics, country families, business, the law, medicine, diplomacy and entertainment have enjoyed the benefits of skills based on the time-honoured traditions of England’s Savile Row.
The business was founded in 1884 when Joseph Handel Cutler, the eldest son of an English engineer who had emigrated to Australia to seek his fortune in the Victorian Gold Rush, opened his first shop at 70 King Street in Sydney.
As Sydney grew the business prospered and in the early 1900s Joseph and his son Leslie Frederick Cutler moved the thriving business to new premises in nearby Bligh Street in the heart of the city's finacial district. The business was to remain in this street for a further 70 years.
It was during the 1930s that the firm began making clothes for leading identities from Australia and overseas including Australian Governors General, prime ministers and overseas diplomats and business men. Author Lydia Gill wrote in her book “ My Town- Sydney in the 1930s”, “In one of these houses was a well-known and excellent tailor patronised by my then boss: I think the name was Cutler. When paying this account for the boss, I was always given a chair while they made out a receipt (whatever happened to all these little ‘thoughtfulnesses’?). The suits being paid for were usually about 25 pounds each- a house could be furnished for about 50 pounds. I was staggered, and really needed that chair so graciously produced.”
After seeing service in New Guinea in the Second World War Leslie's son Bruce took over the running of the family business until his retirement in 1976.
Today it is his son John Handel Cutler, the fourth generation of his family to run a family business, who assiduously maintains the exacting standards, the quality, the cut, the style and the fit that has made his family's name synonymous with exclusive clothing.
Trained in London at the renowned Tailor and Cutter Academy, which sadly no longer exists, John’s skills as a designer and cutter have been honed over more than 40 years in the business. He is supported by his own team of highly skilled craftsmen, including jacket makers, trouser makers and alteration hands.
Their unique combination of skills have been recognised internationally with J. H. Cutler regularly being included in exclusive lists of the world’s best tailors.
