Jan Toorop

Jan Toorop (December 20, 1858, Purworedjo —March 3, 1928, The Hague) was a Dutch painter whose works straddle the space between the Symbolist painters and Art Nouveau.
He was born in Java, and studied in Delft and Amsterdam. He developed a style based on a mixture of Javanese motifs with Symbolism, and his willowy figures and curvilinear designs prefigure Art Nouveau.
