Anguilla japonica (Temminck & Schlegel, 1847) |
The Japanese eel, Anguilla japonica, is a species of eel found in Japan, Korea, the East China Sea and the northern Philippines. Like the European eel it lives in both fresh water and the sea. The spawning grounds are presumed to be the western slopes of the Suruga seamount. They are eaten in Japan as unagi, and also have uses in Chinese medicine.
