Jeff Brown (born April 30, 1966 in Ottawa, Ontario) was a defenceman in the NHL from the mid 1980's to late 1990's.
While in his prime, Brown could have been considered to be in the upper-echelons of NHL defensemen, his swift fall from the peak of his career ensured that he would be remembered for few of his on-ice performances.
Perhaps best known for scoring 15 points during the 1994 playoffs for the Vancouver Canucks, eventually resulting in their second appearance in the Stanley Cup Finals, many Vancouverites remember Brown more for his off-ice antics than his on-ice efforts.
During the 1995-1996 season, Jeff Brown was traded to the Hartford Whalers. Shortly after, a rumor surfaced that explained this was because Brown had been secretly having a sexual liaison with the wife of teammate Kirk McLean. This rumor has persisted over the years, even being called The Worst Kept Secret in Vancouver. However, it has been denied by the participants and may be an urban legend.
Overall, Brown had a solid career, with some stellar highlights, but in the end was unable to secure much of a reputation in the league other than as an unstable influence to teams that would otherwise have been competitive.
Brown who played parts of 13 seasons in the NHL, suited up for 6 different franchises. The Quebec Nordiques, St. Louis Blues, Vancouver Canucks, Hartford Whalers/Carolina Hurricanes, the Toronto Maple Leafs and finally the Washington Capitals.
