[edit] Current event

Is it still? I think it should be removed--User:NFAN3|NFAN3 18:34, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] AfD Result Notice

This article was the subject of an AfD discussion closed on 21 January 2007. The result was Keep. Xoloz 18:03, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Article

This article has recently appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle and was distributed by the Associated Press. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 75.17.113.52 (talk • contribs) 10:02, January 15, 2007 (UTC).

[edit] A "delete/keep" weigh-in

If her death due to water intoxication is unconfirmed, then this article should be deleted. If, on the other hand, it is confirmed, then we should keep this article conditionally (on the condition that it meet Wiki standards of quality and verification).

On the notablity question, I believe that a death by water intoxication is very notable. I am not a doctor (and I would encourage Wikipedians who are doctors to weigh in), but I do know that death by water intoxication is exceedingly rare, in my POV. ProfessorPaul 06:34, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

The death has been confirmed by many new outlets in the US, including CNN.[1]. Since the primary objection of the prod seems to be truthfulness, I've removed the prod. I'm sticking a {{notability}} tag in there to address the notability concerns. hateless 06:49, 15 January 2007 (UTC)
I think the increasing press coverage (BBC, CNN), establishes notability under WP:BIO. Do you mind if we remove the tag?--Kchase T 12:41, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

This article is important to raise awareness of the possibility of water intoxication. A desired outcome is that all people involved with water drinking contests become aware of the risk, symptoms and the importance of proper medical treatment. I am forever changed because if it, I say leave it.

Wikipedia exists as an information reference, not to raise awareness about any particular issue that people aren't yet aware of. In the unlikely event this is deleted, it will probably live on as a redirect to the existing article on water intoxication, which is undoubtedly far more informative.--Kchase T 21:24, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

Delete, even if she did die from water intoxication, which is as of this post undetermined, she isn't a person of sufficient public knowledge, nor historical significance to require her own article. Unique? perhaps. rare? possibly. tragic? indeed. noteworthy? hardly. Not to sound callous, but she's a tragic, but insignificant part of history, this is an encyclopedia, not the Sacramento Bee obituaries. Leaving her name, unlinked, on the water intoxication article, with age and date of death would be more than ample. 68.124.106.90 20:56, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

This isn't a deletion discussion. If someone wants this article deleted, they should try WP:AFD, our deletion discussion process (which requires registering an account). In any event, it's quite unlikely to be deleted, as Strange pretty clearly meets the first criterion of WP:BIO, the relevant notability guideline.--Kchase T 21:24, 15 January 2007 (UTC)
Jennifer barely passes point one on WP:BIO, and qualifies under almost none of the other points, though I suppose an argument could be made for "Persons achieving renown or notoriety for their involvement in newsworthy events." I think I'm going to post on the discussion page over there, and see whether they think she's noteable enough to be included. --Measure 00:16, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

Further Reading of WP:BIO, particularly the top part of the article before the criteria are listed, leads me to believe this article should be deleted. I know, This isn't a deletion discussion. I'm just stating my opinion. If someone did AfD this article, I'd support it. --Measure 00:29, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

This is still a current event, and we will see how the outcome effects her status for having a bio. Also, Matthew Carrington has an article, and it was not deleted. I find the bio interesting. MoonKnight52 21:48, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

I say keep it - I thought it was an interesting read. Sleepyjuly 09:28, 4 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Merge suggestions

I don't really think the article on water intoxication needs to mention Jennifer Strange. There is already a section about Strange on KDND that is almost fully redundant with this page. I would support "merging" this article onto that page - which would involve very little other than turning this page into a redirect to KDND. Thoughts? --Hyperbole 00:51, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

Water intoxication has other notorious cases of water intoxication and so at least some details should be included there. If this page is to be redirected pending the consensus of AfD (which I don't believe it should be), then this article needs to be merged with Water intoxication or KDND. -Parasite 00:12, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

delete this article i don,t approve of it - —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Spiddy (talkcontribs) 09:50, 18 January 2007.

I don't think this article needs to be merged or deleted. Murder charges may be upcoming, it should have its own page. TheKatK 05:37, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

Wikipedia is not a crystal ball. Until the charges are upheld, it is pure speculation. -- ReyBrujo 05:45, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
Speculation is prohibited in the articles themselves, but we editors are free to speculate all we want, including whether the subject will become more notable. hateless 08:06, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

Ok then, how about this: Wikipedia has articles on such people as Edmund Trebus, whose biggest claim to fame (which was documented for television) was that he lived in squalor of his own making, and survived long enough to reform. Why can't Wikipedia also give a page for Jennifer Strange? I think it should remain as a testament for the public good if nothing else. TheKatK 11:13, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

Adding, and if there are criminal charges pressed that is all the more reason to keep this as a seperate page, since the case may be rather complex and deals with how much protection a signed waiver can give etc. TheKatK 11:39, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

Again that word, "if". That implies speculation. And speculation is not needed here. She already appears in two articles, no need to have her listed in her own. It is very unfortunate that she died, but respectfully, that is all she did: die of water intoxication to get a console. -- ReyBrujo 12:11, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
Since the clear consensus of tha AfD vote was to keep the article (as opposed to deleting or merging it), why bother discussing a merge again? --Lee Vonce 16:09, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Update

Posting this here too. "Sacramento Sheriff John McGinness, alarmed by audio recordings obtained by The Bee of the radio show contest that may have led to the death of 28-year-old Jennifer Lea Strange, has directed homicide detectives to look into whether a crime was committed during the water-drinking contest sponsored by the "Morning Rave" show on The End radio station (KDND, 107.9)." From here: http://www.sacbee.com/102/story/109231.html Here is a link to some audio clips from the show in question: http://www.sacbee.com/static/newsroom/kdndslides/ —The preceding unsigned comment was added by TheKatK (talk • contribs).

Sorry for not signing earlier, still new here. TheKatK 05:35, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Jennifer's death

her widower (husband) is suing the radio station i still think it is wrong to force people to hold their wee Spiddy 00:58, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

Widower, at least that's traditionally the term for a man whose wife died. Possibly widow is now the unisex term, which if so is an unusual difference. Usually the male term becomes the ungendered one, like Actor.--T. Anthony 11:29, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
She wasn't forced to do anything. She did it voluntarily to win a prize. WWGB 04:41, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
Having no idea that it could kill her, because people didn't spend five minutes to see what would happen if someone did that. She wasn't forced to do it, but the radio station is solely to blame for forgoing their responsibility to make sure that harm to the contestants can be avoided. - A Link to the Past (talk) 22:50, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
Especially considering the fact that the DJs indicated an awareness of the death of Matthew Carrington and the fact that was caused by water intoxication. Also, the fact that at least one medical professional called the station and warned them of the dangers of the contest. I wouldn't be surprised if the people responsible for this contest do some prison time - in addition to getting cleaned out financially in a wrongful death suit. It would certainly be appropriate if they did. I know we're supposed to be objective here and all that, but that's just on the article pages, right? We can express all the opinion we want on the task pages, right? I'll climb down off my soap-box now...  ;-) --Lee Vonce 15:46, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
They don't deserve anything better than a manslaughter charge. :D - A Link to the Past (talk) 23:25, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
All I can say is that if this went to trial, those people wouldn't want me on that jury. If I were on the jury and the prosecution pitched a second-degree ("depraved indifference") murder charge, based on the evidence I've seen I think I'd probably vote to convict the people responsible for the contest. Not just the DJs but the off-air people as well who came up with the contest. If I were the DA, I'd point out that I could easily make a 2nd-degree murder charge and then offer them a plea of criminally-negligent homocide and let them serve minimal prison time since they're unlikely to repeat the offense, even if any of them ever work in radio again which seems unlikely. A conviction for felony stupidity will probably see to that. --Lee Vonce 16:21, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
I think we all agree that the DJs are scum. However, they didn't FORCE anyone to do anything. She participated in the contest because she chose to. The only person responsible for her death is Strange herself. VelvetKevorkian 10:55, 9 February 2007 (UTC)
And the people who irresponsibly let her do something dangerous, knowing that someone had died from drinking too much water? Why aren't they responsible? - A Link to the Past (talk) 20:31, 9 February 2007 (UTC)
The law is quite clear about this, if you set up a contest you are responsible for the safety of your participants. This is why shows like Fear Factor took great pains to ensure that all of their stunts were tested and met safety measures. Dionyseus 20:41, 9 February 2007 (UTC)
This is definitly Nitendos fault. If they hadn't made such a compelling game machine, it wouldn't be in such high demand 72.173.38.243 06:28, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Darwin Awards

Can someone supply information that confirms that Jennifer Strange was nominated for a Darwin Award? The article that is linked to that sentence does not give any information that supports this claim. SailorAlphaCentauri 17:45, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

There are about 136 Ghits, which all appear to be blogs, where people discuss Strange as a Darwin Award recipient. None of them appear to be reliable sources, so I removed the sentence from the article. --Hyperbole 20:12, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] AfD barnstar

I know this probably violates some sort of convention, but I wanted to award a barnstar to this talk page and thank all those that participated in the AfD discussion regardless of how they voted. I was reviewing the AfD and I feel like this group made a good call, collectively. This article is clearly part of the WP:RECENT phenomenon, which is not bad in itself but is something to be dealt with according to the wikipedia group decision process about forking versus AfD versus finding the right article for the content to go into. The AfD outcome was a balanced and patient approach... We are not deleting it because (1) it would likely be recreated resulting in futher consumption of wiki-editor-time (2) it's unclear whether the mass of content belongs on the KDND article, the water intoxication , the Wii article or somewhere else (3) WP:notability and WP:BIO standards will likely be better assessed in a few months.

Even if this article (and barnstar) is someday deleted, I think the editors here should remember that this is the right way for the process to work, IMHO. Thanks to all for your assuming good faith with each other as the process works itself out. Viva Wikipedia!! MPS 22:42, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Nintendo comment?

Has anyone at Nintendo made a comment about this contest? Did they sponsor it in any way? Tehw1k1 18:49, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

I don't think so. I have not seen anything that suggested that they and I believed that they would have been sued as well if they did sponser it. It also would not make such sense to sponser this because the contest would have gotten very little coverage if it was not for the death and that would not have been of much benefit to Nintendo. --70.48.175.99 23:12, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
