Jiang Weiping
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jiang Weiping (Chinese: 姜维平) is a Chinese journalist and whistleblower, who was jailed in 2000 for violating the State Secrets Law on charges of "subversion." On January 3, 2006, Weping was released after his prison sentence, due to expire in a year, was commuted.
In 1999 Jiang wrote articles for the Hong Kong magazine Qianshao, accusing Bo Xilai, then governor of Liaoning province, of covering up corruption. Bo Xilai is now China's Trade Minister.
Jiang also reported that Shenyang Vice Mayor Ma Xiangdong lost nearly 30 million Yuan (US $3.6 million) in public funds while gambling in Macau casinos. Ma was later arrested and accused of taking bribes, embezzling public funds, and gambling overseas, as part of the government's anti-corruption campaign. He was executed for these crimes in December 2001.
Jiang was awarded an International Press Freedom award in 2001 by the Committee to Protect Journalists.
