João Weber Griebeler was born in Roque Gonzales, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.
João Weber Griebeler is the author of the short story "Um Sonho Que Se Foi" ("A Dream Gone By"), his first fictional piece. In 2004 his first novel "Párias da História" ("Pariahs of History") was released. (None of these books has (2004) been translated from Portuguese.)
"Párias da História" is a historical novel about a German immigrant who arrives in Brazil in 1832, right after what is considered by scholars to be the first (1824-1829) wave of the Germanic peoples' immigration to Brazil before the Brazilian emperor had put a halt to it... Therefore, the main character of the novel, Carl Schultz, starts his new existence in Brazil as an illegal alien.
Beyond the life of Carl Schultz, the novel follows the lives of generations of his descendants, up to the very present day, as they continue on in their journey as outsiders in a system that has not always been as inclusive and as opinion makers traditionally have led most to believe.
One could also argue that such erroneous concepts have more often than not been perpetuated by Brazilianists who in most cases heavily depended on established notions and the establishment's archives as primary sources. These studies then were absorbed back in Brazil creating an ongoing 'body of knowledge and understanding' about the 'cultural reality of Brazil' which often was not as thoroughly reflective of regional realities as it could have been.
In short, this is a tale of love, hope, deception and assimilation into the human fabric of the culture of southern Brazil in modernity. Reading this book one can understand that this cultural process is definitively an ongoing one.
João Weber Griebeler wrote this novel using deceptively simple language but at the same time he wrote it in a language undeniably rich in regionalisms, both of the Gaucho as well as of the Deutschbrasilianer or German-Brazilian cultural traditions.
The Book raises serious questions regarding controversial social issues of the day such as The Landless Rural Workers' Movement of Brazil and Liberation Theology.
João Weber Griebeler also is the publisher and editor of the local newspaper Jornal Igaçaba.
Furthermore, João Weber Griebeler also created the annual Prêmio Missões de Literatura (collective anthology) and Letras Contemporâneas which now is in its seventh year.
