Joe Brolly (Irish: Seosamh Ó Brolaigh) is an Irish Gaelic footballer who played for Derry. In recent times he has worked as a journalist, barrister and television pundit.
[edit] Background
He is the son of well-known folksingers, has provided entertainment of a different sort over the years. He became a border in St. Patricks Grammar School in Armagh, where he was under the tutilege of the great Br. Larry Ennis. His father is Sinn Féin counciller and MLA, Francie Brolly.
A barrister, Joe even played basketball for Ireland as a schoolboy. He currently works as a gaelic football pundit on the RTÉ television Gaelic Athletic Association show, The Sunday Game.
As a barrister Joe has defended many Irish republicans in court.
[edit] Playing career
His greatest achievement is no doubt playing corner forward in the Derry senior football team that won the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship in 1993. It was in the Sigerson Cup that Joe Brolly made his first burst onto the national stage, as a member of Trinity College, Dublin's strongest ever side, in the early 1990s. He was also a prominent member of DUCAC in his Trinity days, becoming a member of the student executive. His only inter-varsity medal was in the Ryan Cup in 1992, with Queen's University Belfast, where he was a postgraduate. Joe added a second Ulster Senior Football Championship in 1998, in the final of which he scored the clinching goal in the last minute. His GAA All Stars Awards recognition surprisingly came in the relatively barren years of 1996 and 1997. In the latter year, Brolly was a forward for Dungiven, (whose county S.F.C. victory was his second) as they coasted to Ulster Club Championship glory. He currently plays for St. Brigids G.A.C. in Belfast.
