Joe Shogan

Alexander Joseph Shogan Jr. was born in Spokane, Washington in September of 1948. After graduating from Gonzaga Preparatory School in 1966, Joe attended Gonzaga University's ROTC program and was sent to Vietnam in the fall of 1971[1], just one year after his graduation from college. As a member of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, Joe received two Bronze Stars for his service in combat, and also served 20 years in the Army Reserves at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Joe has had a private law practice for the past 30 years, and has been chosen Washington State Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year multiple times in the past fifteen years. He was first elected to the Spokane City Council as Northwest District Councilman in the fall of 2003. Joe was then unanimously elected by the council to City Council President in 2005, as Dennis Hession took over Jim West's duties as Mayor of Spokane. He and wife Maureen have two sons, Christopher and Stephen.
