Joel Sheltrown

Joel Sheltrown, a Democrat of West Branch, Michigan is a state representative in the Michigan House of Representatives. A decorated Vietnam War veteran, successful small businessman, and popular regional musician, Sheltrown was first elected to the State House in 2004. He was re-elected in November 2006 to represent Iosco County, Michigan, Ogemaw County, Michigan, Roscommon County, Michigan, and Missaukee County, Michigan. His current term expires on December 31, 2008. He is eligible for one more term in the Michigan House of Representatives under Michigan's term limits law. It is anticipated he will be the front runner for the State Senate elections in 2010.
Joel Sheltrown is widely viewed as a conservative Democrat. He is a strong advocate of Pro-Life causes, public education, alternative energy, aerospace development, and expanding public recreational access opportunities. He is the first Democrat in the state's history to be elected to the board of the Michigan Coalition for Responsible Gun Owners. A close ally of current Michigan House Speaker Andy Dillon, Sheltrown plays a lead role in policy formation in the Michigan House of Representatives while concurrently serving as a liaison to the minority Republican caucus. He is the chairman of the House Tourism, Outdoor Recreation, and Natural Resources committee, historically known as the House Conservation Committee.
