Johann Langquist
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Johann Langquist (born in Sweden) was the session vocalist for Swedish doom metal band Candlemass during their first studio recording. He recorded their first album Epicus Doomicus Metallicus and departed soon after, (despite Candlemass' countless efforts to make him stay) reputably to work on a pop project he had started earlier. Unlike his successor Messiah Marcolin, Langquist was a baritone, which meant he had a lower pitched voice and therefore sang the songs in a lower vocal range than the ones that followed with Marcolin in control. Langquist's vocals were perfect for Candlemass' sound, as his deep, melancholic style voice complemented the band's lyrics of fantasy, religion and depression very well. His most famous aria as Candlemass' frontman is indisputably Solitude, an extremely melancholic song about the horrors of depression and loneliness that has remained to this date, as a milestone in the creation of the doom metal genre.
