John Goulstone

John Goulstone (born c.1940) is a noted cricket researcher and historian.

He began his researches in the 1950s while still in his teens and had a couple of spectacular early successes when he discovered the portrait of legendary Georgian bowler Edward "Lumpy" Stevens and the partial scorecard of the match in 1769 in which John Minshull scored the earliest known century in cricket history, although the match in question seems to have been a minor fixture.

Mr Goulstone subsequently worked on The Cricket Quarterly with Rowland Bowen and his own Sports Quarterly Magazine (1977).

Mr Goulstone's books include :

• Hambledon - The Men and the Myths (2001)
• A Cricketing Etymology (2001)

Mr Goulstone seems to value his independence for he has never joined the Association of Cricket Statisticians and Historians. Apparently, though this may be an anecdote, he has always held that it "would not take his subject seriously enough"!
