John Hickman (American bluegrass/folk musician)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
John Hickman is an American banjo player. He plays banjo in the Byron Berline Band, based in Guthrie, Oklahoma. Hickman, along with artists like Earl Scruggs and Béla Fleck, is widely considered to be amongst the best banjo players in modern times. He is famous for his ability to imitate the picking styles of other prominent banjo players. Hickman released a single solo project in the '70s. As a member of BCH (Berline, Crary, Hickman) he toured Japan and other countries, and that ensemble still plays irregularly today. In the '90s, BCH added Steve Spurgin's song writing, singing, and bass playing talents to the group and John Moore began playing mandolin with them soon after, forming California. California has been the recipient of the IBMA Instrumental Group of the Year. He recently had heart surgery. He currently teaches banjo and repairs instruments in Byron Berline's Double Stop Music Shop in Guthrie Oklahoma, and plays dates with California, BCH and the Byron Berline Band.
