John Kay (economist)

John Kay (1948— ) is a Scottish economist. Born in Edinburgh, he was educated at the Royal High School, Edinburgh University and Nuffield College, Oxford. He has been a fellow of St John's College, Oxford since 1970. He was a Lecturer in economics at University of Oxford from 1971–78.
In 1979, he became Research Director and the Director of the independent think tank, the Institute for Fiscal Studies. In 1986 he became a professor at the London Business School and founded an economic consultancy business, London Economics. From 1997–99 he was the first director of the Said Business School, University of Oxford. He has been a director of Halifax plc and several investment companies.

Since 1995 he has written a column on economics and business issues for the Financial Times. There are three collections of his articles: The Business of Economics (1996), Everlasting Light Bulbs (2004) and The Hare & the Tortoise (2006).
Other books include The British Tax System (1979 and four subsequent editions), Foundations of Corporate Success (1993) and The Truth about Markets (2003).
