John Tipler

Johnny Tipler was born in Leicester, lived in Leeds as a child and grew up in Chelmsford. For five years he was a chorister at Ely Cathedral. He then moved to Chelmsford where he attended King Edward VI Grammar School and then Southend College of Art. After a career in public relations and journalism ranging from hotel promotion to motor racing, he dropped out and enrolled at Stirling University in Scotland as a mature student. He lived on a farm with his first wife. They later moved to Norfolk and lived at Heydon while he attended UEA studying art history and renovated a derelict house where his children Jules and Keri were born. Johnny Tipler also played drums in local bands including The Press and The Corruptors. After a brief career as a conservator of medieval wall paintings he went back into motoring journalism. He has been writing books since 1990, with over 30 published on a variety of motor vehicles, including Morgan, TVR, Lotus, Caterham and Alfa Romeo sports cars, Land Rovers, Triumph and Harley-Davidson motorcycles, plus several on Lotus formula 1 cars, as well as biogrpahies of racing drivers Graham Hill, Ronnie Peterson and Ayrton Senna. He freelances for 911 & Porsche World magazine and Land Rover Owner. He now lives with Laura and two children, Zoe and Alfie and likes to spend time in the Douro in northern Portugal.

• Before writing books he conserved medieval wall paintings in churches.

• He has two daughters (17 and 24) and two sons (14 and 26).

• He has a terrier named Spicer.

• His car is infamously known as the "Peppermint Pig"!
