John Wemyss, 1st Earl of Wemyss

John Wemyss, 1st Earl of Wemyss (d. 1649)
Knighted in 1618 and created a Baronet of Nova Scotia in 1625, with a charter to the barony of New Wemyss in that province of Canada.
Created a baron in 1628, he was advanced to Earl of Wemyss in 1633.
He was Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, a Privy Councillor and one of the Committee of the Estates.
He was succeeded by his only son, David, the second Earl.
