Is the caption correct? I recall seeing this picture in in some bool, which said it depicted the dicovery of the element phosphorus. That would certainly fit the picture quite well! Jorge Stolfi 02:38, 30 December 2005 (UTC)
- According to the copy in Wikicommons, the title is "The Alchymist, In Search of the Philosopher’s Stone, Discovers Phosphorus, and prays for the successful Conclusion of his operation, as was the custom of the Ancient Chymical Astrologers" Goldfritha 23:48, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

- That alchemist was Hennig Brand, and on his wikipedia page there actually is a link to a low quality version of the same picture. Nico HNJ Kuijer 06 Februari 2007
