Joseph Brooks
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Joseph Brooks was a lawyer, politician, and carpetbagger who lived in Arkansas most of his life. He was the leader of the Liberal Republicans in Arkansas. The party was nicknamed "The Brindle Tails" because it was said that when he spoke he sounded like a brindle-tailed bull. He is probably most remembered for losing the 1872 gubernatorial race and then physically removing the winner, Elisha Baxter, from the state capital and declaring himself Governor in 1874, starting the infamous Brooks-Baxter War. After an armed conflict and intervention from President Grant, he was removed from office. He later became Post Master of Arkansas.
