Joseph Vilsmaier

Joseph Vilsmaier (born January 24, 1939 in Munich) is a German film director.
After boarding school near Augsburg, was trained to as a technician to make film cameras, spent nine years at a music conservatory and was afterwards a member of a Jazz group. After some years as a technician, he moved into film, first as an assistant, then as cameraman.

His debut film, Herbstmilch in 1988, additionally starring his wife, Dana Vávrová, was a huge success, which was only to be outdone by Comedian Harmonists in 1997. Unfortunately film critics are not that fond of his Vilsmaier's work.
Most of the time is director and first cameraman in one person.
He has three daughters with is wife Dana Vávrová: Janina Vilsmaier, Theresa Vilsmaier, and Josefina Vilsmaier who are also all actresses.
While filming his latest film The Last Train, probably the last movie produced by Artur Brauner, he got injured by the collapse of a camera tower, from then on his ability to work was very limited, so Vávrová took over directing. The two of them were awarded the special price by the jury at the bavarian Film awards 2006 for The Last Train.
