[edit] This article sounds a bit biased
I feel that this article is too biased against Ion Iliescu, and that it presents certain hypotheses as facts. Though I personally believe that Iliescu is guilty for those events, he has not been officially accused of anything, and the guiding principle should be 'innocent until proven guilty', not the other way around. So please eliminate phrases like
"President Iliescu called in the miners and his government provided them with train transportation to Bucharest in order to save the "besieged democratic regime" and restore order and democracy in Bucharest"
from the article; even though it is a wide-spread hypothesis amond the intellectuals of Romania, it has (unfortunately, from my purely personal point of view) not been tried by the competent authorities. So let us not create even more controversy in an already very controversial topic.
- It is certain he did called them on public television. There are also recordings of him saying "thank you for anwering our call" and there are quotes of him in the newspapers of the time, both pro- and anti-governmental newspapers. bogdan 22:59, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
- I still think the whole thing is pretty obscure. It is possible that other people in power (for example the former Securitate which was still very much alive) persuaded the miner leaders to do this, for the purpose of preserving the current goverment. Even though Iliescu most probably knew something about this, I do not think that we should label him as the only one to bear the blame; after all, he was just the spokesperson of an entire class of people, all of which had great interest in the political situation.
I too know very well the famous television speech where he thanks them for "saving democracy" or whatever, but we do not have more arguments for this other than a couple of speeches. After all, we should know by know that politicians' speeches are to be treated with suspicion. It seems too rash to label this case closed, when people really only have guesses, and not true arguments about what happened.
