K. M. Mammen Mappillai

Born on November 28, 1922 in Kerala , Mr Mammen Mappillai was the youngest of a prosperous family of eight sons and a daughter. He started his industrial life with a toy balloon manufacturing unit from a small shed near Madras (now Chennai) in 1946. By 1952, Madras Rubber Factory ventured into the manufacture of tread rubber. Since then, the company has grown to become a INR 30 billion enterprise.
In 1993, K.M. Mammen Mappillai was awarded the Padma Shri award for his contribution to industry - the first industrialist from South India to be given this honour.
