Kamat
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kamat is a common surname amongst Hindus of the Konkan on the west coast of India in the states of Goa, Karnataka and Maharashtra. They could be Konkani or Marathi speaking people. The word Kamat is believed to be derived from the name of the occupation. Kaamthi means landholder, cultivator or agriculturalist. "Kaamthi" is a contraction of "Kama" (work) + "Maththi" (soil). However, in modern times, the surname is no more linked to the profession.
The spelling Kamat is used by Kamats from North Kanara, and those in the South Canara generally prefer to call themselves Kamath.
Kamat may also be written as Camotim in the erstwhile Portuguese held territories of Salcette and Bardez in Goa though they are today mostly written as Kamat.
