Karl Hackett (b. 1962) is a British computer graphics designer who, after living under the alias Lee Simm since his release from prison in 1988, faked his own death by reporting himself missing to the Scotland Yard casualty bureau as a presumed victim of the Paddington rail crash in October 1999.
Following his release from prison, for which he had served a 12 month sentence for indecent assault, he changed his name of a deceased friend and worked in Essex for almost a decade before being apprehended by police.
Tried at Horseferry Road court, he was charged with wasting 31 manhours of police time and given a five month suspended sentence for two years on February 14, 2000.
Police received a number of other suspect reports of supposed victims of the rail crash.[1]
