Karuah, New South Wales

Karuah is a town on the old Pacific Highway, in New South Wales, Australia. It sits in Port Stephens Council. The township is 205km north of Sydney and straddles the Karuah River.

In 2004 the Karuah Bypass was opened which, as part of the AusLink program, speeds up car and truck travel times past the township.

Karuah has long been known for its oysters, having a number of oyster shops lining the old Pacific Highway.

It is thought that the name means 'native plum tree' in the local Aboriginal dialect [1].
