Kehaar

Kehaar is a fictional character in Richard Adams' novel Watership Down. He is a black-headed gull who is forced by a cat-induced injured wing to take refuge on the Down. Initially hostile and even foul-mouthed towards Hazel and his rabbit-followers, he eventally, in token of gratitude towards their hospitality when they dig him a hole for him to rest in and even fetch worms and grubs for him to eat, promises to fly for them as soon as his wing recovers in order to find some does for the mating season. Because they have never seen a gull before, and also because of his frequent impatience, guttural accent and unusual way of phrasing things (even referring to a "warren" as "a town of rabbits") he poses something of a problem for the rabbits, but at the same time a fair amount of fascination and even affinity- in particular Bigwig, who like Keehar is a brave, tough fighter. Keehar does, when his wing improves, help them find does, (or "mudders" as he calls them, meaning "mothers") and helps them a second time by startling the Efrafan rabbits when they pursue Bigwig. He does however, meet his match in General Woundwort, and refuses to search for him after his disappearance.
