Key Witness is a Toronto indie rock band, formed in 2005. Their debut album Cocaine Heart was self-released in 2006. The members of the band are: JM McNab (vocals, guitar); Dave Clark (bass); Shinnosuke Yamaguchi (drums); Stefan Banjevic (guitar, vocals); Jacques Mindreau (violin).
The band's music incorporates many genres; although many of the songs have alt-country roots, they draw on indie rock, garage rock, classic rock, folk, blues and even traces of goth. The vocals of JM McNab bring to mind Bob Dylan, while the song writing is reminiscent of Wilco, Led Zeppelin, The Misfits and at times Primus.
Key Witness formed from the high school jamming of Stefan and JM. While attending University in Toronto, Stefan put out ads in NOW (magazine) looking for a drummer and bassist. Shinnosuke, who had arrived from Japan a month before, responded and Key Witness played their first gig at the Horseshoe Tavern on June 27th, 2005. Later joined by Dave Clark and Jacque Mindreau (both York University film students), the band played critically acclaimed set at the North by Northeast music festival opening for King Khan and his Shrines, and has had their music appear in several independent films.
