Kilmartin Glen
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kilmartin Glen is the area in Scotland surrounding the village of Kilmartin which is south of the town Oban. The area is well known for its historic archaeological legacy as there are more than 350 ancient monuments within a six mile radius of the village, with 150 of them being prehistoric. Included are some very important Neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age sites, including Temple Wood (a henge monument), Ballymeanoch (standing stones), Dunchraigaig (burial cairns), and Nether Largie, (chambered cairns and standing stones) as well as the remains of the fortress of the Scots at Dunadd. Several of these and other monuments have cup and ring marks and many of the cairns are aligned in a north-south linear cemetery. The Kilmartin Museum is located within the village itself at the head of the valley. At the opposite end is the Moine Mhor or Great Moss. Nearby is the village of Crinan and Crinan Canal. Just to the south is the village of Cainbaan and the town of Lochgilphead.
