[edit] Trip to New York City
I decided to go to New York for my birthday (22nd of January) but a cheaper flight was on the 4th of February. Here we spent 4 days in New York.
[edit] Route
Glasgow International Airport (GLA) → Amsterdam Schipol Airport (AMS) → John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK)
[edit] First Leg
[edit] Glasgow International Airport (GLA) → Amsterdam Schipol Airport (AMS)
Date: 4th of February, 2005
Departure Time: 1135
Actual departure time: 1200 noon
Airline: KLM Cityhopper
Checked in and then we had to wait at the International departure lounge. Glasgow airport is quite a nice airport, though the duty free is not so good. Our flight was delayed by 25 minutes, (if we were to arrive at the actual time, we would only have about 30 mins to get to our next flight), so this could have meant that we would miss out AMS → JFK flight. For which I was worried about. But when we got onto the plane we only had to wait about for five minutes until we taxied. Departed and the flight attendants we very helpful and nice and I was offered a sweet! The meal was a rather unusual bap with chicken on it, with a light mayonnaise, which I thought was very nice. When we arrived we had to wait about another five minutes until the walkway from the aircraft to the terminal building. When in the terminal building, we had to run to another pier. This was located about a five minutes run away (25 mins if you walked) and we were on the massive Boeing 747.
[edit] Second and Final Leg
[edit] Amsterdam Schipol Airport (AMS) → John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK)
Date: 4th of February, 2005
Airline: KLM Royal Dutch Airlines
We took our seats, and I of course got the window seat. I got an excellent view of the flaps and spoilers (when we landed, as spoilers are not used in the take off role). This flight lasted about 8 hours, even although the entertainment on the 747 was not good (one overhead TV) the latest movie was on it. The meals where a rice and chicken thing, and a lovely dessert (chocolate cake, which quite frankly, I have got once on an aircraft but never again since this time). Upon arriving at JFK (Terminal 4) we had to walk all the way down a hill, though on the left hand side of the wall was lovely and decorated. Here at immigration, we had to wait about an hour for our passports to be checked and while my mum's photograph and fingerprints were taken. Moving along we had to collect our baggage, which the conveyor belt had stopped (because we took and hour to get via immigration). After this, our passports were then checked again by an immigration police officer (he had a gun!). Next, we had to go to "Ground Transportation". Here we handed over a leaflet give by Expedia to a woman at the desk. The time is now 0100 and even after a total of about 11 hours flying time, I am not tired. We were seated next to a black man with the baggy trousers etc and with dreadlocks who kept on repeatedly nodding his head as he listened to his Walkman. After a while, our number was called and the "taxi" was awaiting us outside.
[edit] Driving into the City
Coming out of the airport, nearby Brooklyn, it was absolutely freezing! (This was just after the snow-in at the city). We boarded the taxi and were on out way to the city. Here the driver was speeding and went through numerous red lights.
[edit] Arriving at the Hotel
We were staying at the Sheraton Manhattan Hotel [1] which to my surprise was mediocre. We arrived here at about 2am. Despite being one of the most expensive and over-priced hotels in the world. We were placed in a no-smoking room. Here three double beds await us. There was a large TV, a coffee machine and a decent bathroom. (Designer toilet amenities were included, but this turned out to be Pantene).
[edit] First day
We woke up and looked around a few blocks and avenues to look for some sort of restaurant. The restaurant at the Sheraton was notably over-priced. We arrived at a nearby café and I had simple toast. We then headed towards the nearest subway, which surprisingly took about 10 minutes. When we got onto the train, the Red Line, we realised that we were in fact on a completely different line. This ended up taking us into the suburbs of the city (probably Brooklyn). We then caught any train that we presumed to be going into the city.
[edit] Second day
My body clock has finally got used to New York time. Here we visited Times Square and I went into the Hershey's. Which I was tempted to buy a life-sized bar of Hershey's chocolate. This was where I bought a large pack of Jolly Ranchers. And ate them almost in one day.
[edit] Third day
Today we went to Century 21 for literally the whole day. That's it!
[edit] Fourth day
Today we went to the "World's best place for Cheesecake". I never thought it was that good, actually. After this we went to JFK airport. It was a $50 flat-rate and took about one hour. Arrival at the airport was ultra-modern. It looked like something from the future, literally!
[edit] Flight from JFK → AMS
Nice flight. Saw numerous people being stopped by immigration police and "normal" police. It was quite suprisingto see that becuase I have never seen it done before. On the KLM Boeing 777, ultra-modern aswell. Got my own PVC, but this old Dutch man kept on repeatidly thumping on his seat. He finally decided to move back to his normal seat (thankfully!), and when he turned around to see who was "attacking" his chair, (!), I stuck out my tongue.
[edit] AMS → GLA
While waiting at the gate for about two hours, I fell asleep on my suitcase. I was totally exhausted! This flight was mediocre. Nothing more - nothing less. --Kilo-Lima 19:53, 13 December 2005 (UTC)
As of December 2005, I am currently planning another trip to New York City. No dates are final, put probably about the 2nd to the 6th of February. I will update this as soon as possible. Thanks. --Kilo-Lima 22:09, 31 December 2005 (UTC)
