Kirby's allies

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kirby and all his friends
Kirby and all his friends

This is a listing of fictional characters from the Kirby video game series that appear as allies to Kirby during his adventures. Their function is to aid Kirby with various unique abilities in Kirby's Dream Land 2, Kirby's Dream Land 3 and Kirby 64, as well as having non-playable appearances in Kirby's Star Stacker and Kirby no Kirakira Kizzu. Also, in Kirby and the Crystal Shards, you can turn into a random animal friend by using the stone/cutter ability.

In Kirby's Dream Land 2, you must either battle a mini boss or regular enemy to rescue one that has been trapped. In Kirby's Dream Land 3 you will usually find around three of them waiting in special rooms, of which you can choose only one.

The animal friends will share Kirby's powers if he obtains a copy ability, but with often show different and unique effects depending on the power and what friend you're using. (For example, Parasol with Coo causes Coo to spin rapidly, but Parasol and Rick has Rick balancing a Kirby ball on the top of it.)

[edit] Helper Friends

[edit] Rick the Hamster

Rick is the first you encounter in Kirby's Dream Land 2. Kirby rides on his back and Rick can run, jump and climb walls, but he cannot fly. He has very good traction on ice and sand, making him very useful in frozen and desert levels. He has a girlfriend named Pick who wears a pink bow. You must bring Rick to her in a level in KDL3.

Rick appears as a minor character in the Kirby: Right Back at Ya! anime. He's very casual and often sarcastic, but doesn't seem to have a close friendship with Kirby. He lives with many other animals in Whispy Wood's forest, in a great tree called Acore.

He was given an Australian accent in the dub, but in the original is voiced by the same actress as Kirby, Makiko Omoto.

[edit] Coo the Owl

Coo is a wise and level-headed bird with the ability to fly against strong winds. He carries Kirby with his feet. He appears as a cameo character in the anime, and is respected by many others such as Tokkori. He is voiced by Chiro Kanzaki in the Japanese version.

[edit] Kine the Ocean Sunfish

Kine as he appears in the anime
Kine as he appears in the anime

Kine is the most useful in underwater levels, being able to swim against the strongest currents. He carries Kirby inside his mouth, and allows Kirby to inhale and swallow enemies underwater instead of just spitting it. While he can stay on land indefinitely, he's very slow and awkward to move and cannot jump well. Also, unlike the other characters, Kine's abilities work the same underwater as on land(the other animals abilities are stunted underwater) In the games he has a wife, a pink sunfish named Mine.

Kine was a slightly more prominent character in the anime than the other two, even getting an entire episode devoted to him. His personality is rather youthful and naive, and he has a huge crush on the character Tiff. He is voiced by Nobuo Tobita in the original.

[edit] Chuchu

Chuchu
Chuchu

There is some debate on just what Chuchu is. Many believe she is an octopus, (which in this case she may be in the suborder of the order Octopoda Cirrina), others some sort of giant amoeba or slime. She is the only female animal friend, and rides sticking to Kirby's head. She has the ability to stick to ceilings and travel that way. She can also fly inflating and deflating her body like a jellyfish, but each successive "puff" gives less and less height until eventually she can only use them to slow her fall. She has a friend called Nyupun that looks like her, but is smaller, yellow, and wears a sailor cap with a pink ribbon.

She never appears in the anime.

[edit] Nago the Cat

Nago is a Japanese Bobtail and rolls Kirby in front of him like a ball. He has a triple-jump but cannot fly. He has a girlfriend who is a white cat called Shiro.

Nago never appeared in the anime, however he does appear on early design art.

[edit] Pitch the bird

Pitch is perhaps the youngest, and definitely the smallest of all the animal friends, even smaller than Kirby. While Kirby carries Pitch while they walk, Pitch will carry Kirby when he runs or flies but looked very strained when he does. Pitch is said to look up to and admire Coo, wanting to be as strong as he is when he grows up. Pitch's mother, a large pink bird, also appears in KDL3.

Pitch never appears in the anime.

[edit] Gooey

Gooey
Gooey

Gooey is Kirby's best friend. He first appeared in Kirby's Dream Land 2, and could be found in the various bags in the game under certain conditions. In that game, his only function was to restore Kirby's health, but in Kirby's Dream Land 3 he was a playable character. He is essentially a small blue blob of goo with a silly expression on his face. Gooey has similar powers to Kirby (except that he licks up enemies), and a second player can take control of him while the first player controls Kirby. In a single player game, Gooey can be summoned as a computer-controlled ally. He's apparently a non-evil version of Dark Matter, and during the game's final battle in space, Gooey's flying form is similar to Dark Matter. There is also apparently a girl version of Gooey found in Kirby's Dream Land 2 who has similar function as Gooey did in that game. She also gives a single game completion percentage point for the first encounter with her. The girl Gooey looks exactly like Gooey, except she's lighter and wears a bow.

[edit] Ribbon

Ribbon is a fictional character featured in the Kirby series of video games. Her appearance is in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards.

It all started on Ripple Star, shown as a perfect, peaceful paradise inhabited by happy fairies fluttering about their kingdom. But their fun-loving days ended when a mysterious black cloud known as Dark Matter, the very same Dark Matter from Kirby's Dream Land 2 and Kirby's Dream Land 3, appeared and surrounded the peaceful planet, the once blue sky vanishing into the darkness. Dark Matter had come in search of the fairies' secret treasure: a great Crystal. Ribbon knew of the dreadful things that would come to pass if Dark Matter gained control of the powerful Crystal, and quickly went to the Queen, who urged her to protect the Crystal. Ribbon's orders were clear: take the Crystal into space and hide it on another planet to keep it out of Dark Matter's grasp. She grabbed the shining stone and escaped from Ripple Star, just before the planet was completely engulfed. But as Ribbon fled, she turned around to see her planet one last time, only to see three dark clouds split from the mass of Dark Matter, which didn't hesitate to chase her. They attacked mercilessly and knocked her unconscious, shattering the great Crystal to pieces in the process, and poor Ribbon tumbled through space, eventually landing on the familiar planet of Popstar.

To be more specific, she ran head first into the all too familiar hero we know as Kirby. Confused and distraught, Ribbon looked around to see where she was, and checked to see if the Crystal had survived the crash. But upon looking in her hands, she soon realized that what she held was no more than a mere shard of the once glorious and powerful Crystal. Kirby watched on, noting her sadness, and tried to find some way to console her. Soon, however, he remembered being hit by something much like what the young fairy held in her hands just seconds before she crashed into him. He called her over and showed her the very shard he had found, and with an expression of hope on her face, she flew over to him, and the two tossed the shards into the air. Ribbon squealed with glee as the shards joined together to form a larger shard, and she grabbed it and spun around in circles in the air.

Kirby congratulated her and the two introduced themselves, and the fairy recalled how she got here in the first place. Looking out into space, she saw her home planet in the distance, now completely enveloped by the Dark Matter, as many more tiny shards flew through the sky and landed on the other planets in the solar system. Feeling helpless once more, her gaze left the sky as Kirby hopped over to her and offered to help. Surprised, she paused a bit, and quickly accepted his assistance with a smile, and they ran off into the sunrise together, to recover each piece of the great Crystal and restore Ripple Star to the peaceful planet it once was.

Unlike to her appearance, Ribbon seems to be very strong, being able to carry Kirby during the whole fight against O2.

[edit] Adeleine

Adeleine appears as an ally to Kirby during Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards where she is possessed by Dark matter and Kirby must defeat her through battle to free her from it‘s grasp. After which she joins him on his adventure. She is a young female artist with the uncanny ability to paint objects then bring them off the page into reality, with the exception of Kirby’s battle with her where she bring monsters to life she mainly creates power-ups like food and extra lives to help Kirby throughout his adventure. However she does appear as a boss during Kirby's Dreamland 3 where the circumstances of Kirby's confrontation with her is very similar (specific information Kirby series bosses). A similar ability also belongs to an enemy featured in Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land as a boss character called Paint Roller (Kirby). Her official desciption in the Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards game manual is "Adeleine is a motivated young artist who travels to Pop Star to study art at a famed academy. Instead of improving her painting skills, she has to brush up on her survival skills when she is overcome by the dark matter."

[edit] Waddle Dee

A single Waddle Dee appears as Kirby's ally in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards.
