India, in terms of the Constitution of India, is a secular (meaning the state would not interfere in citizens’ religious beliefs) country and any one is free to practice any religious faith of his/her choice. However, some states of India have banned conversion of an individual from one religion to another, if such conversion is on account of material inducement or otherwise. In such cases, providing a proof that the element of inducement was absent is a difficult task. In the present instance, a person is imprisoned; instead of being protected from the marauding crowds is something strange for a country like India where the sovereign state has not interfered in the private beliefs of the individuals, at least after India’s independence. The issue is being debated rather hotly by Indian intelligentsia. --Bhadani 07:46, 18 September 2005 (UTC)
