Charles was crowned on 1 January 1651 as King of Scots. He was not crowned also as King of England, which was not the right of the Scottish lords or commons.
The term 'whig' is of uncertian origin, but is thought to derive from 'whiggam', a term used by country people in the south-west of Scotland to urge on their horses. It was first used in a political sense in 1648 in what became known as 'the whiggamore raid', the siezure of power by the extreme Covenanters following the defeat of the Engager army at Preston. I have never come across any use of the term in relation to Border cattle reivers. Rcpaterson 00:23, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
