Knock on Any Door is a 1949 film directed by Nicholas Ray with Humphrey Bogart and John Derek, based on the novel by Willard Motley. It has the often quoted line: "Live fast, die young, and leave a good-looking corpse". It is about a lawyer (H. Bogart) defending a young man (J. Derek), (who grew up in the slums), on trial for killing a policeman and is facing execution if convicted. The defense case is that slums breed criminals and the community is partly to blame for crimes committed by the people who are forced to live in miserable conditions.
