[edit] About
Named after Dale Mitchell, the mid-1940s Sooner letterman who still holds OU's career and single-season batting records, L. Dale Mitchell Park was dedicated prior to the 1982 season. Originally constructed at a cost of $1.27 million, L.Dale Mitchell Park provides a state-of-the-art facility for the OU baseball program.
[edit] Renovations
Renovations during the 1998 season included an upper concourse plus addiitonal rest rooms and concession stands. The locker room, training room and equipment room were also updated. Prior to the 2002 season, the press box facility underwent state-of-the-art improvements. The press box and radio broadcast booths were significantly expanded as well as VIP suites and a handicap-accessible elevator were also added. With these improvements, L. Dale Mitchell Park should serve as a prime location for hosting baseball NCAA Tournament regionals and super-regionals events. Plans are also in the works to add a National Championship team meeting room and indoor batting/pitching facilities contained within an addition behind the third base dugout. Once this project is completed, L. Dale Mitchell Park will provide Sooner players and fans alike with one of the most exciting atmospheres for collegiate baseball in the nation.[1]
[edit] Awards
The University of Oklahoma baseball program was awarded the top honor in the collegiate division of the Beam Clay Baseball Diamond of the Year Award in 2001. The award, sponsored by Beam Clay and Baseball America, recognizes the best playing surfaces in three levels of baseball: professional, college and schools, municipalities and parks. The honor marked the second year in a row that OU's L. Dale Mitchell Park was placed as one of the best college baseball fields in the nation after finishing second in the competition in 2000.[1]
Oklahoma took first place honors in the competition in 1994, the last time OU was able to enter the contest prior to last season. Programs can enter the competition only once every five years after taking first place honors.
Four major league head groundskeepers served as the judges in this competition.
