Lac Courte Oreilles
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lac Courte Oreilles is a lake in Sawyer County, Wisconsin near the town of Hayward. The lake has an abundance of northern pike, muskie, walleye, bass and other fish, and is a popular fishing destination.
The name was given by French fur trappers who were the earliest European explorers in the area; the French translates as "Lake Short Ears," as the trappers believed the Anishinaabe peoples living in the area cut off the edges of their ears. The Ojibwe name for the lake is Odaawaa-zaaga'igan which means "Ottawa Lake".
