Lavaux (district)

Lavaux is a district located on the north-eastern shore of Lake Geneva (Lac Léman) in the Swiss-romand canton of Vaud between Lausanne and Vevey. It consists of the following municipalities:
- Chexbres
- Cully
- Epesses
- Forel
- Grandvaux
- Lutry
- Puidoux
- Riex
- Rivaz
- Saint-Saphorin
- Savigny
- Treytorrens
- Villette
The capital of the district is Cully, but used to be Lutry.
Lavaux belongs the most prestigious Swiss wine-growing regions. It was built mostly by monks about 800 years ago and consist of 830 hectares of terraced wineyards. It benefits of a temperate climate, but the southern aspect of the terraces with the reflection of the sun in the lake and the stone walls gives a mediterranean character to the region. The main wine grape variety grown here is the Chasselas.
Although the vineyards of Lavaux are protected from development under the cantonal law, it is a candidate since January 2006 as a World Heritage Site in order to give further protection as well as international recognition. As the conservation of the stone walls is greatly dependent on the survival of the wine growers.
