Lawra

Lawra is a town in Upper West Region, north western Ghana. It is known for its musical instrument manufacture, and for the Kobine harvest festival with important dancing and musical events.

The town was an administrative centre for the British colonial authorities. The ruins of a large colonial mansion still, rather incongruously, remain. It is now the district capital of Lawra District, with a population of some 10,000, and serves as the centre for the local tribal and political administration. NGOs in the area, such as the Savannah Education Trust, also use the town as a base.
