LB&SCR C2 Class
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The London, Brighton and South Coast Railway C2 Class was a class of 0-6-0 steam locomotives, intended for freight trains. 55 were built by the Vulcan Foundry between 1893 and 1902 to the design of Robert J. Billinton. The were nicknamed 'Vulcans'.
During the first decade of the twentieth century the railway experienced a considerable growth in traffic and by 1908 the class were no longer capable of hauling the heaviest trains without loss of time. Dougle Earle Marsh therefore rebuilt one example with a larger boiler in that year which was classified "C2X". All but ten of the class were similarly rebuilt over the next thirty years. The surviving C2 locomotives were all withdrawn between 1935 and 1950, but most of the C"X rebuilds lasted until the early 1960s. The last two survivors were withdrawn in February 1962.
