Some dietary fats he promotes are also high in saturated fats, including unrefined coconut oil,[1] which also contains medium chain triglycerides. Long chain saturated fats are considered by the American Heart Association as contributing to heart disease[2]. Some other nutritional groups advocate certain saturated fats in a current scientific controversy. Although seemingly fair arguments, ruling out all saturated fats is a too simplistic. Studies showing the negative health consequences often neglect that the saturated fats in question have been hydrogenated i.e. trans fats. Therefore, if we only consider the saturated fats occuring naturally (of which Mercola is referring to) this apparent "ill-advice" no longer seems quite so controverisal.
