"a great letterer has as much to do with the quality of the comic as the penciler, inker, writer, or colorist." Hahahaha! Was this article actually written by a comic letterer?

I agree that statement may be going a little too far. (This is coming from an amateur who prefers to "digitally hand-letter" -- drawing each letter with a graphics tablet on a computer. I think of it as getting the best of both worlds.) Certainly, though, a bad letterer can ruin a comic just as easily as a bad penciler, inker, writer, or colorist. But with the use of computer fonts, truly bad lettering isn't so common. There is definitely an art to lettering, and I think that the art itself is indeed as important as the art of drawing, inking, etc., but I don't think it has as great an impact on the final product.
