Like-A-Fish
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Like-A-Fish Technologies is an Israeli business, founded by Alon Bodner in 2001, that is developing a system to extract breathable air from water. They have developed a prototype artificial gill. Like-A-Fish's technology does not create air from water, but (according to Like-A-Fish's website) centrifuges the water, causing at the center lower pressure, where dissolved air comes out of the water.
The key issue remaining is battery life. Currently a one kilo battery would only last for one hour, whereas a regular SCUBA tank can last longer (dependent on depth). The biggest possibilities lie in underwater habitats, which have access to electricity, but need constant refilling of air tanks. Additional possible uses include systems for SCUBA divers and submarines, among others.
