[edit] The Lyceum Program
This program is designed to help students attend International Baccalaureate program at Eastside High School (however, recently many top math students from the Lyceum have been going to Buchholz instead). To attend the Lyceum program, students must apply with an essay and a portfolio of their academic career. Those with a high work ethic, good academic records, a superb application essay, and excellent test scores are accepted into the program. The students take accelerated academic classes and generally a course level higher than the rest of the students in their grade level. The program is widely viewed as the top in the state for the grade levels it covers, but it has been subject to controversy in recent years.
In eighth grade, students are required to take a foreign language (either French or Spanish). The classes in sixth and seventh grade are math (various levels ranging from Advanced Math to Algebra II), Humanities, Social Studies, Language Arts, Science, and an elective. In eighth grade, Humanities is merged into Language Arts and the foreign language class is added.
[edit] Elective Classes
The school has a variety of elective classes. The choices are band and orchestra, drama, chorus, art, family and consumer science, physical education, television production, and being a teacher's aide.
- The school's band program is notable for being invited to New York, New York and Washington, D.C. for the last week of the 2005-2006 academic school year to perform. The band has also been invited to a national competition in Charleston the end of the 2006-2007 school year. The school's band program is currently under the direction of David N. Olsen, and is considered by many to be the most talented musical program (middle school) in Alachua County.
- The chorus program attends and competes in district and state singing competitions and comes back with many high scores.
- The drama program has two annual performances and competes in both the district and state Junior Thespian drama competition.
[edit] Administration
The school is currently under the administration of Don Lewis, the principal, and Mike Gamble and Diane Hill, the assistant principals. They joined the school in the beginning of the 2005-2006 school year.
