List of Armies of the Japanese Army

The Imperial Japanese Army was organized into several types of Armies:
[edit] Territorial Armies
- The General Defense Command was responsible for Japan, Korea and Formosa. Formed March 1941 and disbanded 8 April 1945.
- 1st General Army appeared in April 7, 1945 to replace the General Defense Command.
- 2nd General Army appeared in April 7, 1945 to replace the General Defense Command.
- Air General Army appeared in April 7, 1945 to replace the General Defense Command.
- Japan Defense Army was responsible for Japan - contained over 2 million men in 55 divisions, plus numerous separate units by August 1945.
- Northern Army - Hokkaidō and northern Honshū (see also organization of the Imperial Japanese Army, Hokkai (North) region)
- Eastern Army- Eastern Honshū and Tokyo
- Middle Army - Central Honshū
- Western Army - southern Honshū, Shikoku Island, and the Ryukyu Islands to include Okinawa.
- Formosan Army - Responsible for Formosa now called Taiwan
- Chosen Army - responsible for Korea (see also organization of the Chosen Army of Japan)
- Japan Defense Army was responsible for Japan - contained over 2 million men in 55 divisions, plus numerous separate units by August 1945.
- Groups of Armies - territorial organizations equivalent to western Theaters of War
- Kwantung Army (Kantogun) - Manchuria
- China Expeditionary Army - China
- Southern Expeditionary Army Group - also called the Southern Army and the Southern Area Army, responsible for southern China and South East Asia
- 5 Air Armies of the Imperial Japanese Army Air Service

- Area Armies - Equal to western field Armies. There is still much confusion between numbered Area Armies and Armies, some being referred to in IJA records by both terms.
