Irish Plant Collectors
- John Ball, 1818-1889, First President Alpine Society 1858-60. Collected plants in Morocco with Joseph Dalton Hooker.
- Patrick Browne, Doctor/Botanist of Jamaica
- Thomas Coulter, 1793-1843, Born Dundalk, qualified as a doctor from Trinity College and went toMexico as a doctor 1824-9 to the Real de Monte mining company. From Mexico he sent living cacti to the Irish National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin. He went to California in 1831, Arizona 1832, and collected pines later introduced into cultivation in Ireland. While there he also discovered the white flowered matilija poppy ( Romneya coulteri). (Pinus coulteri) is called after him. He returned to Ireland in 1834. He was a correspondent with Charles Darwin. He was appointed curator of the herbarium at Trinity College, Dublin.
- Lady Charlotte Wheeler Cuffe (nee Williams), 1867-1967. She was also a noted botanical watercolourist. Her husband Sir Otway wheeler was an Imperial official in Burma and she travelled in the remote regions. Near Mount Victoria in 1911 she found two rhododendrons, one yellow (rhododendron burmacium) hardy, the other white indoor (rhododendron cuffeanum), seedlings of these were sent to Glasnevin where they thrived. She also designed a Botanic Garden while in Burma, she returned to Ireland in 1923 to Leyrath, Kilkenny now a hotel.
- Michael Pakenham Edgeworth, 1812-1881. Born Edgesworth, Longford, half brother of novelist Maria Edgeworth. Indian Civil Servant 1831-1881, Commissioner for Settlement of Punjab 1850. Collected plants Aden, Ceylon, India. Genus 'edgeworthia' named after him. [1], [2],[3], [4]
- Eugene Fitzalan, 1830-1911,Born Derry, Collector, Nurseryman, Poet, emigrated to Australia 1849. In 1860 went on an expedition to the north-east coast with Lt. J.W. Smith and 1861 to Dalrymple. He sent many plants to Ferdinand von Mueller. In 1888 he set up the Fitzalan gardens in Cairns which is still the location of the local Botanic Gardens
- Robert D. Fitzgerald, 1830-1892. Born Tralee, Botanist, Artist, Collector, emigrated to Australia 1856, Deputy Surveyor General New South Wales 1873, retired 1887. Collected orchids [5] Wallis Lake NSW 1864, see website Australian National Botanic Gardens. Australian National Botanic Gardens
- Dr. A. Gogarty, Surgeon who settled inRio de Janeiro in the early 19 century. He sent plants, seeds, orchids, ferns and bulbs to the Irish National Botanic Gardens, in Glasnevin from 1839-1843. He used a new container the 'Wardian' mini-glasshouse which improved the survival rate of plants on long voyages.

- James Keys, 1841-1916, born Irvinestown, Co.Fermanagh, emigrated to Australia and worked as a teacher, collected plants, lichens in Mount Parry district of South East Queensland 1880-1914 and recorded the aborignal names of plants
- Edward Madden, From Kilkenny, he was an offices in the Bengal Rifles in India, 1830-50 and collected plants in his leisure time. These were sent to the Irish National Botanic Gardens Glasnevin, Belfast, Kew and to private gardens and nurseries. The 'Himilayian lily...
- John Madden, 1837-1902, Clones, Co.Monaghan, claims in his North American expeditions to have introduced the douglas Fir
- Whan William Taylor, 1829-1901, born Moneymore, County Londonderry a Presbyterian Minister, M.A. Queens University Belfast, emigrated to Australia. Major collector of phanogams many of which were sent back to DR. Dickie, PProfessor of Botany at [[QUB}}
- William Thomas Lock Travers, 1819-1903. Born Dundalk emigrated to New Zealand, qualified as a lawyer. Collected plants forKew 1860-80
