List of Masonic temples
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Freemasonry is a fraternal organization whose membership is held together by a shared set of moral and metaphysical ideals. Groups of Freemasons are called lodges, while the buildings in which they meet are often referred to as temples. Temples may house the meetings of numerous Masonic lodges, as well as other Masonic groups such as Scottish Rite bodies or Knight Templar commanderies.
There are thousands of Masonic temples around the world.
Most Masonic temples in the United States were built between 1870 and 1930. American architects who designed Masonic temples include Burnham & Root, Napoleon LeBrun, Osgood & Osgood, John Russell Pope, and John C. Austin.
Shriners' mosques are related buildings that were built by the Ancient Arabic Order of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, a group that was composed of men who were also Freemasons. Shriners' mosques were erected in many American cities between 1906 and 1930.
The articles linked on this page are dedicated primarily to the buildings themselves and their history.
The best current work on the design of Masonic temples and how their architecture is linked to the fraternity's rituals is: William D. Moore, Masonic Temples: Freemasonry, Ritual Architecture, and Masculine Archetypes (Knoxville: University of Tennessee Press, 2006).
