Howie Rose is the designated fill-in play-by-play announcer for SNY when Gary Cohen is off. He called several games for SNY in late May and early June 2006 when Cohen was out with an appendectomy. Coincidentally, Mets RF Xavier Nady was on the disabled list with an appendectomy during the same period.
Ralph Kiner, Bob Murphy and Lindsey Nelson comprised the Mets original TV/Radio team from the franchise's inception in 1962 through 1978. At the time it was the longest continuous broadcasting team stretch in history.
Among Bob Murphy's signature contributions to Mets broadcasting was his trademark "Happy Recap," which he gleefully recounted following each Mets win.
Ralph Kiner hosted the postgame show "Kiner's Korner" during much of his time on the WWOR broadcast team and the show returned during the final years on Fox Sports Net. In 2006, with the launch of SNY, Kiner joined the regular broadcast team during the fourth inning of selected Friday home games and some holidays (including the Fourth of July).
Bob Murphy's final game as play-by-play announcer for WFAN was September 25, 2003. Gary Cohen replaced him as the number one play-by-play announcer until the conclusion of the 2005 season, when he moved to the SNY television booth. Howie Rose is now the number one WFAN play-by-play announcer.
After Bob Murphy passed away on August 3, 2004, the Mets wore commemorative patches on their uniforms for the remainder of the season. The radio broadcast booths at Shea Stadium are named in his honor.
In the ninth season Seinfeld episode "The Puerto Rican Day", Jerry and friends leave a Sunday afternoon Mets game early because the team is getting crushed. They become stuck in traffic stemming from the annual Puerto Rican Day Parade in Manhattan, and while hopelessly in gridlock, they listen to Bob Murphy's call of the game on WFAN. The Mets mount a late rally, prompting Jerry to pose as fictional automobile tycoon Kal Varnsen in order to gain access to a television. In the final moments of the episode, Jerry's car is set ablaze when Kramer inadvertently sets the Puerto Rican flag on fire. As he watches the car being destroyed, Jerry learns that the Mets lost the game. Murphy was not credited for his vocal appearance as himself. Not coincidentally, in real life, Jerry Seinfeld is a devout Mets fan.
In June 28, 2006, during a series against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park, color commentator Ron Darling traded places with NESN's Jerry Remy for the game.
As the Mets commemorated the 20th anniversary of their 1986 World Series championship, Ron Darling and Keith Hernandez were hired by SNY to serve as color commentators for Mets television broadcasts (and occasionally on WFAN radio broadcasts, especially when Gary Cohen is off and Howie Rose covers him on SNY). Darling and Hernandez were key components of that world championship team.
On May 25, 2006, WFAN personalities Mike Francesa and Christopher "Mad Dog" Russo broadcast a Major League Baseball game at Shea Stadium between the Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Mets on radio for local charities. Russo did the play-by-play and Francesa did the color analysis except that they reversed the roles during the third and seventh innings. WFAN and the Mets teamed up to raise thousands of dollars for several charities in Queens.
Legendary sportscaster Howard Cosell hosted Mets pre-game shows during the team's early years.
Gary Cohen worked double duty for the Mets' 2006 postseason as host of pre- and post-game coverage on SNY, and fifth inning color commentary and sixth inning play-by-play) in the WFAN radio booth. During past MLB postseasons, Cohen had served as a play-by-play announcer for ESPN Radio.
