[edit] Silent Hill

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.
  • Harry Mason is a writer whose wife died 3 years ago and is now single. Seven years before the start of the game, Harry and his terminally ill wife found an infant abandoned at the side of the road near Silent Hill. They adopted the girl and named her Cheryl. After his wife's death, Harry continued to raise Cheryl alone. Several years ago Harry and Cheryl went to Silent Hill for a vacation. As they neared town, Harry's Jeep left the road when Harry swerved to avoid a pedestrian.

Upon waking after the crash, Harry found himself alone in Silent Hill and on a quest to find his lost daughter. Along the way, Harry learned the truth: his daughter was connected to a cult operating in Silent Hill and she was part of a grand scheme by the cult to give life to a demon. Harry was able to defeat the demon and before he escaped, he was given a new infant girl. For further information on Harry and the infant, see the Silent Hill 3 section below.

  • Cheryl Mason is Harry's seven-year-old adopted daughter. When she and her father went to Silent Hill on vacation, she disappeared. She was drawn to the town through mystical purposes further explained below in the segment about Alessa Gillespie.
  • Cybil Bennett. A police officer from Brahams, a neighboring town.
  • Lisa Garland was a nurse on the staff of Alchemilla Hospital. Like many of the members of the hospital staff, she was addicted to White Claudia and would perform any request of Dr. Kaufmann to keep him from cutting off her supply. One of the duties Lisa had to perform was taking care of the comatose Alessa Gillespie, who frequently made Lisa distressed and nauseous with her constant pus- and blood-filled wounds which frequently needed bandaging.

As the game progresses, Lisa slowly realizes that she is a ghost, which explains how she is trapped in the Otherworld. Lisa, as stated in a few Silent Hill guides and walkthroughs, in the game was a "ghost". She was a manifestation, created from Alessa's fond memories of her, in the Otherworld, hence why she is the only "human" figure that Harry ever encounters there. However, she was essentially no different than the other monsters Alessa created. One theory is that in a way Lisa was being used by Alessa to stop or at the very least slow Harry's quest to find his daughter, in that by playing on Harry's desire to help and do the right thing perhaps he would stop his search of the Otherworld which would in turn would stop Dahlia from discovering her hiding place there.

Another theory is that in a way Alessa also views Harry as her savior through her other half as Cheryl, and used the manifestation of Lisa as a lead Harry could relate to and empathize with so that he would discover the truth of the suffering both Alessa and Lisa endured in the hospital at the hands of the cult, which is revealed to Harry when he reads Lisa's diary. Some have theorized that Lisa's soul is finally set free when Harry learns the full truth through reading her diary, which allows her to finally get revenge on Kaufmann at the end as Harry escapes to safety. In Silent Hill 3, Alessa, in the form of Heather, still harbors a sympathetic kindness for the tragic nurse.

  • Dahlia Gillespie is an eccentric old woman who owns an antique store in Silent Hill. Underneath this façade, Dahlia is a key member of the Silent Hill cult and the mastermind behind Alessa’s birth and injury. Dahlia is Alessa's mother, though their relationship was anything but loving. Dahlia coerced Harry, via his quest to find his missing daughter, into helping her find and subdue Alessa in the Otherworld so she could make the girl birth the God. Upon the God’s birth, Dahlia was killed by either the Holy Woman in White (Incubator) or by Incubus.
  • Alessa Gillespie is the enigmatic apparition that Harry Mason encounters during his journey into the hellish town at the start of the game. It is revealed that Alessa was originally meant to take in her mother's footsteps and become a Priestess of the Holy Woman sect. When Dahlia and the other cult members found out about her powers they decided that Alessa would be the perfect vessel for the God. It is speculated that Dahlia is Alessa's birth mother and that Dr. Kauffman is the biological father. Alessa, who was troubled by many psychological problems, refused to take part in the cult’s activities. In order to hasten the birth of the God, Dahlia burned down her house with Alessa inside. Alessa would then split her soul in half and create a new baby. This baby would be found by Harry Mason and his wife. She would be named Cheryl Mason. Alessa would spend the next seven years in a coma suffering in a hellish nightmare, which ultimately becomes the basis of the darkness that Alessa spreads in Silent Hill. Upon Cheryl’s return to Silent Hill, Alessa would send out her soul.

After Harry crashes, the souls of Cheryl and Alessa merge. At the final battle, the physical Alessa, clad in the robes of Valtiel, and the Soul of Alessa are merged and form the Holy Woman in White aka Incubator aka Mother of God. When Dr. Kaufmann throws a bottle of Aglaophotis on the Mother of God she prematurely expels the demon known as Incubus aka the Demon God Samael. Harry is then able to defeat the prematurely expelled and thus weakened Incubus. After the battle the Holy Woman in White reappears. She gives Harry a baby with the complete soul of Alessa and Cheryl, which in a way is the Holy Woman in White herself reborn. For more information on this child, see the Silent Hill 3 section below.

[edit] Silent Hill 2

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.
  • James Sunderland is a man in his late twenties drawn to Silent Hill after receiving a mysterious letter from his wife, who had died three years earlier. Near the end of James' strange odyssey, he comes to realize the truth about his wife’s death: that she did not die three years earlier of a fatal illness, but in fact died as recently as three days ago when he euthanized her by smothering her with a pillow. The implication is that he suffered an extremely severe nervous breakdown after killing his wife and blocked the three years of her illness from his memory from the shock at what he had done.

James' ultimate fate is dependent on which ending is achieved, based on the player's actions during the course of the game. In one ending, James comes to accept what he did to Mary and in doing so gets one final heartfelt goodbye with her, in which he is forgiven and is able to leave Silent Hill as a man who finally accepts reality, taking Laura as his adopted daughter as Mary wanted ('Leave'). In another ending, he starts a relationship with Maria, who is hinted at being sick (like Mary?) showing that he has learned nothing and will never entirely leave Silent Hill (see below.) In yet another ending, James cannot live with his guilt and commits suicide ('In Water'). And in yet another ending, James decides to resurrect Mary using the dark supernatural powers of Silent Hill ('Rebirth'). Once the previous four endings are completed, a fifth, comedic, ending can be unlocked where James finds out that all the scenario was the work of a dog in the observation tower in the Hotel. In some special editions of the game, there is a sixth ending where James is confronted by Harry Mason and a group of UFOs who abduct him.

While the canonical ending of Silent Hill 2 has yet to be established, both the actions of James himself and the details of Silent Hill 4 seem to point that James (and Mary) never come back from their trip to the town. This information, however, is taken from James' father, and may not be accurate for a number of speculated reasons.

  • Mary Sheperd-Sunderland was James' late wife; however, unlike the three years that he believes she's been gone, it's much more likely that she has only been dead for a week or so. She had long been suffering from a terminal illness, but died instead when James smothered her with a pillow, partly because he couldn't stand to watch her suffer anymore and partly because he was simply exhausted with caring for her during her severe moodswings. Her disease is never mentioned by name, but it confined her to bed for three years and possibly disfigured her physically, as well as made her verbally abusive to those around her from the agony it kept her in. In the game, James’ guilt takes Mary’s form as Maria, haunting him relentlessly.
  • Angela Orosco is a girl in her late teens (according to Konami, she is nineteen), who James meets in Silent Hill. She appears to be somewhat older, and the game's designers have said this was deliberate, to make her appear somewhat "off" and emotionally stunted. She states that she is searching for her mother. Very little explicit information is revealed about her, save that she was very dependent on her mother for comfort and that her father, Thomas, repeatedly raped and abused her both psychologically and physically. Clues throughout the game imply that Angela’s mother convinced her that she deserved everything that happened to her, which eventually drove the poor girl to stabbing her father to death with a kitchen knife. However, after realizing what she had done, she ran away, terrified and in total shock.

Angela is the first person James meets in the game, and she seems unaware of her past, but still retains her extreme fear of physical contact from men. At the end of the game it seems Angela is full of guilt over her actions, blaming herself for all that has happened to her and unable to forgive or even justify her actions of being the victim of an abusive household. She becomes increasingly delusional, mistaking James for her "mama," and her shy, fragile demeanor begins to crack and she becomes more openly bitter and cynical. She may also discover the nature of the town's effects and it causes before James, as she at one point accuses James of abandoning Mary in favor of another woman. Her personal demons are manifested as fires burning everywhere (possibly representing suicidal tendencies and the overall feeling of being hopelessly trapped), and the "Abstract Daddy" monster (resembling two figures squirming on top of a walking mattress) that James encounters. (However, it may represent itself as the actual human form of Angela's father in her eyes, and only James alone sees them as monsters). It can be said that depending on the ending received, she is a contrast to James as a character...as the two suffer from similar guilt but may or may not deal with it in a different way.

  • Eddie Dombrowski is a young man James meets in town. As the story progresses, James learns that Eddie, after a lifetime of ridicule due to his heavy weight and possibly lower than average intelligence, ran away from his hometown after killing a dog and shooting the dog's owner in the leg. While exploring the town, James finds a number of bodies killed execution-style, some or all of which may have been killed by Eddie. In the end, Eddie confronts James, threatening to kill him after James states that he too finds Eddie's actions repugnant. (The delusional Eddie thinks that James is "laughing" at him, when James is of course doing anything but.) James guns Eddie down in self-defense, and his remorse for killing a human being stirs his memory, making him wonder if Mary actually died three years ago.

Eddie's demons in the town manifested as everything -- not just people, but everything -- laughing at or otherwise making fun of him, which only catered to and increased his homicidal tendencies as he was permitted to shoot anything and everything in sight. Eddie's official profile states that he was generally a friendly, gentle person at first, but due to the damage taken by others emotionally, an inner rage was created. He is in all respects, a perfect example of repressed anger when given no emotional outlet. Like Angela, he figures out the nature of the town before James does, telling James that they were both "called" to it because they're "not like other people."

  • Laura is a stubborn, bratty little girl James encounters in town several times. She claims that she was in the hospital at the same time as Mary, recently, but James refuses to believe her. Eventually, she opens up more to James, and because of this he discovers that Laura was a close friend of his dead wife's, and that Laura felt James never cared about and even hated Mary. It is implied and widely believed that Laura, being an innocent child with no serious sins, does not see any of the monsters the other characters encounter, and leaves Silent Hill, either with or without James depending on the ending. Curiously, she speaks to Eddie in a very upfront manner, even verbally abusing him in a very light manner. For some reason, Eddie never takes this out on her and converse with her much more casually that he does with James. The reason for this is a subject of some debate among fans.
  • Maria is a seductive young woman who bears an eerie resemblance to James’ late wife. She tempts and clings to James and as the story progresses, James sees Maria repeatedly killed. In the end, James recognizes Maria for what she really is: an embodiment of lust and selfish desire, created to quell (or perhaps stoke) his feelings of guilt over what he did to Mary. Depending on the acquired ending, James either guns her down after she becomes a monster or escapes Silent Hill with her. This possible ending suggests that she will come down with the same disease that Mary had and James will possibly inflict the same fate upon Maria as he did his wife Mary.

In the sub-scenario "Born From a Wish", which is playable in either the PS2 Greatest Hits or the Xbox versions of the game, players control Maria, who has only existed for a few minutes at the beginning and as such, has no idea what is going on. However, events in the scenario show the player how she transitions from being a soulless creation of the town, to the product of James' desires (hence the title "Born From a Wish") that will ultimately serve her role in James' crucible. She is miserable when she first learns of her true nature and consider suicide, but ultimately decides to live and goes to meet James.

  • Ernest Baldwin is a lonely, misanthropic man living in a mansion of the West South Vale district. His presence is only indicated in the "Born From a wish" scenario. This man is never shown physically which leads many to believe he's already dead, but has still been grounded to the town as some sort of spirit or ghost, due to his unfinished business of resurrecting his deceased daughter. He is supposed to find peace when one will finally give him an ingredient he seeks for a ritual that is supposed to rebirth his dead little girl, Amy. Even though this character seems more or less unrelated to the events of the second game, his role seems more to approach the one of a God revealing to Maria her true identity and her part behind the James-Mary project. However, he discourages her from going to see James, saying that James is a "bad man" and seeks "the part of you that is not you." Some fans are convinced that Ernest may have been the director of the Brookhaven Hospital and the one who hid the Silent Historical Society key in the Rosewater Park and left the letter about it to James. Therefore, he may be related in the way that he warns James about the mechanism of Silent Hill.

[edit] Silent Hill 3

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.
  • Heather is a seventeen-year-old girl with an attitude. Heather's real name is Cheryl Mason, the infant given to Harry by Alessa at the end of the first game. She is the combined souls of Cheryl Mason and Alessa Gillespie from SH1. She has lived under the pseudonym Heather and dyed her hair blonde since an encounter with a cult member who had tracked her and her father down in Portland (see Harry's Silent Hill 3 entry below). Since the cult's failure in the first game, the remaining leaders spent years looking for Harry and the child. Eventually, with the help of private detective Douglas Cartland, they located Heather. Presumably they originally intended to do nothing (as Vincent implies). However, a fanatical, emotionally unstable woman named Claudia Wolf takes matters into her own hands and torments Heather by warping her once safe haven into a twisted alternate reality. Heather makes her way from twisted versions of her local mall, the subway, and a mysterious underground sewer, eventually back to an office building in her neighborhood.

Desperate to reach her father and make some sense of the terrible events happening around her, she arrives home to find her father tragically murdered. Claudia reveals herself responsible for the death of Heather's father. After Heather dispatches the monster Claudia used to kill Harry, she swears vengeance on Claudia. A guilt-ridden Douglas drives Heather to Silent Hill and vows to aid her in any way he can. In the town, Heather hunts down the cult, specifically Claudia. Within Brookhaven Hospital she is stalked by its former leader, Leonard, whom is revealed to be the abusive father of Claudia, and Heather confronts and defeats Leonard, who has taken on the form of a monster.

She then receives unlikely help from a cult father, Vincent, and makes her way to the Cult's church within town. After confronting a ghastly doppleganger, the essence of Alessa's dark side, she finally reaches her goal and confronts Claudia. It is revealed to Heather that Claudia's purpose was to nurture the fetus of the cult's God, which has lied dormant in Heather all this time, with hatred in order to birth it. Heather, however resists, and in defiance takes a pill made out of aglaophotis within her treasured pendant specially made by her father and given to her. In taking this special pill, Heather is able to expel and reject the demon fetus and vomits it out. Heather is then forced to fight an unfinished version of the God, taken in by Claudia in desperation.

After killing the horrible creature and foiling the Demon God's birth like her father before, Heather finally succumbs to the despair of losing her father, but picks herself up and leaves the cult behind her. Afterwards, Heather abandons her false identity and takes up her real name again, but not before giving Douglas the scare of a lifetime in the form of a practical joke. It is speculated that Douglas takes Heather in to watch over her after the loss of her father. The official ending is unspecified, but is presumed to be the 'Normal' ending, since it's the only ending the player acquires on their first playthrough regardless of their actions.

  • Douglas Cartland is a private investigator in his fifties hired by Claudia Wolf to find Heather. While investigating her, Douglas finds a lot of strange inconsistencies in the information. Douglas tracks Heather down to a shopping mall near her home. This action sparks off the strange events of the game. Eventually, Douglas takes Heather to Silent Hill so she can exact her revenge against the cultists. While driving there Douglas mentions that he went to Silent Hill once on a missing persons case to no avail. The people he mentions are probably, although not specifically stated to be, James and Mary from Silent Hill 2 (vague clues in Silent Hill 4 may support this theory). Douglas is a single divorced father. His son was killed while trying to rob a bank at an unspecified time in the past. Douglas blames himself and his financial difficulties for his son's reckless behavior that cost him his life. Parts in the game also hint that he could be the one who shot his son during the robbery when he was still a police detective.
  • Claudia Wolf is a priestess of the cult, in her late twenties or early thirties. She holds a very dogmatic view of the order, in contrast to Father Vincent's more worldly attitude, and believes that to save mankind, she must find Heather, the reincarnation of Alessa and bring about the rebirth of God. To do this, she hires Douglas Cartland, who later turns on her when he finds out her agenda. Many of her beliefs can be traced back to Dahlia Gillespie who, we are told by Vincent, "brainwashed" her. She was close childhood friends with Alessa, and abused by her father, Leonard, when she was younger. While she appears dead set on her goals, it is revealed late in the game that Claudia is extremely torn inside over the terrible things she has had to do to Heather in order to fulfil her mission. She reveals this in the final confrontation with Heather. She even believes that she herself does not deserve to be saved from the God due to her sin of Harry's murder. This proves that Claudia isn't entirely evil, but an extremist who would stop at nothing to bring about the birth of the God, even if it means to harm the person she cared about most of all.
  • Father Vincent is a high priest of the Silent Hill cult, but is more interested in increasing his own powers and wealth than arranging the birth of a new demon. He indulges in the pleasures of the real world. He does not want to see the birth of "God" and the ensuing reshaping of the world into the twisted decaying Otherworld. He gives Heather some left-handed advice, but in the end, Claudia kills him when he tries to betray her. He seems to know a great deal about the Otherworld and how it relates to the real world. In a key cut-scene, he accuses Heather of being a hypocrite after killing so many (he remains ambiguous about how many whats), to which Heather retorts that they were monsters out to kill her. His next sentence is, "Monsters? They look like monsters to you?" This comment on its own presents has causes some to the theorize that the protagonists of each game are actually killing people, their images changed by the town's influence to appear as grotesque products of their worst nightmares, though after this sentence he does mention that it was "just a joke", leading to further bewilderment.

Another theory to why Vincent makes the comment is because he underestimates Heather's ability to resist the influence of the demon fetus inside her which sees the monsters as servants of the demon rather than the true monstrosities a normal person would see them as. The fact that Heather is indeed truly fighting monsters is supported by the fact that Douglas also sees the monster in the mall where, after Heather defeats the Splitworm he specifically says "And that Monster, what the hell was that?", proving that the monsters Heather sees are not a delusion. Also, when Vincent confronts Claudia in the church he makes a comment about the nightmarish scenery of the world she is trying to create, clearly giving evidence that the monstrous creatures and hellish Silent Hill are indeed real.

  • Leonard Wolf is Claudia's father and was once a leading member of the Silent Hill cult. He was the keeper of the Seal of Metatron, which he believes to be capable of stopping the birth of the God. The player later learns that this belief is unfounded. Leonard holds a different view of "God" and paradise than his daughter. Leonard believes only a chosen few and true believers should be allowed into paradise. After stabbing Stanley Coleman in a religious argument, he was sectioned in Brookhaven Hospital. He appears to the player as a deformed monster similar to a man boiled in water, possibly due to Claudia's influence on the Otherworld, as we later find out that he abused his daughter.
  • Harry Mason went home with the infant given to him before leaving Silent Hill. Years later, he killed a cult member that had tracked him and his daughter down. As a result, he and Cheryl were placed in the witness relocation program and given the names Harry and Heather Morris. Eventually, with the unknowing help of Douglas Cartland, the cult located the Masons again and killed Harry. Heather, enraged by her father’s murder traveled to Silent Hill to seek revenge. Before heading to Silent Hill, Heather found Harry’s journal and learned that he had considered killing the child out of fear of her power but was unable to do it because he loved her, no matter what. Throughout Silent Hill 3's later stages, Heather can find notepads on which are written messages from Harry, since these notepads functioned as save points in the very first Silent Hill.

[edit] Silent Hill 4: The Room

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.
  • Henry Townshend is the main protagonist of Silent Hill 4, whom the player takes control of. Henry is a young man in his twenties who lives in Room 302 of the South Ashfield Heights apartment building, having moved there two years ago after being "attracted" to the room in a sense he couldn't quite understand. His strange saga begins when he finds himself trapped inside his apartment with a hole in his bathroom as his only means of escape. It is theorized that his attraction was in part due to Walter's subconscious influence on him, Henry living the life of peace and tranquility inside Room 302 that Walter, himself, was denied. Out of all the Silent Hill protagonists, Henry could be seen as the most innocent as he has no personal connection to Silent Hill nor does he harbor any inner demons to face. He is quite literally, an unfortunate normal man caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. A quiet and thoughtful young man, it is hinted in the game that Henry is a photographer.

In his attempt to find a way out of his predicament, Henry ventures out into the hole in the bathroom and finds himself in a variety of places - some deserted areas located right within town such as the local Subway - and some bizarre areas that defy logical explanation. It is implied that Henry is travelling through areas recreated from Walter's personal experiences; an example being an area that is considerably larger than it should be in order to reflect young Walter's perspective. In these twisted places, Henry encounters various people also stuck in these manifested worlds, and he is forced to watch them die grisly deaths one by one at the hands of Walter. Henry later saves his next-door neighbor Eileen from a similar fate and is accompanied by her for a large part of the game as he vows to protect her.

Unfortunately for Henry however, things go from bad to worse when he realizes that his very room, once his safe haven, is slowly being corrupted by evil forces. Returning to his apartment begins to become more dangerous, prompting Henry to find ways to hold off the demons in his room by more mystical means. As well as this, Henry and Eileen must venture back to the previously visited worlds and they find that the previously killed victims have returned as virtually inviolable violent ghosts intent on killing Henry. As if things couldn't get any worse, Henry discovers that he too is one of the planned victims of the serial killer Walter. Henry is unexpectedly helped by the ghost of Joseph, the previous occupant of room 302 and a victim of the Sullivan, and begins a race against time to not only save Eileen, but himself as well by confronting Walter once and for all. Whether Henry and Eileen survive to truly escape the influence of Walter is up to the player.

  • Eileen Galvin is a young attractive woman in her twenties who is a long time resident of the South Ashfield Heights apartment complex, in Room 303. Although she has lived next door to Henry for two years, she does not know him very well. As a young girl, she met Walter in a subway where he was homeless and shivering, and she gave him her doll to keep him warm, the only act of kindness in Walter's entire memory. As such, her image remains in his mind, and she was chosen to be the 20th Sacrament, the Mother Reborn.

She later plays a key role in Henry's struggle to survive, as the two travel a great deal of the later scenario’s together as Henry wishes to protect Eileen from a dark fate. Eileen aids Henry any way she can, even helping fight monsters despite her injuries. Unfortunately, although Eileen is still alive, she has been tainted by Walter's beating and as such she begins to slowly fall under his influence as the game progresses. Eileen begins to bleed more profusely, and also starts saying bizarre things such as chants the more she is corrupted. If she is corrupted enough, Eileen may even begin to physically act in an unstable fashion. The player as Henry must find ways to help Eileen fight off this evil influence as much as possible, as her fate is dependent on the player's success in doing this by the end of the game.

  • Cynthia Velasquez is another young woman who Henry meets in the Subway World. She seems to think this is her dream. However, she can't find a way out so she asks Henry to help her out. She is a seductive lady with a bit of an attitude. It is likely that she is a prostitute due to the way she dresses and also through the casual sexual references she indicates to Henry. She offers to give him "special" favors. She is killed by Walter Sullivan in the Subway world by being stabbed to death, with the numbers "16121" carved into her chest (which almost certainly is actually "16/21", since she is victim number 16 of the "21 Sacraments".) When she was a teenager, she once met a poorly, homeless young man in the same subway station, who turned out to be Walter. She persisted to make fun of him in front of her friends, which could very well have marked her as a future victim.
  • Jasper Gein is a young man whose hobby is investigating occult activity in Silent Hill, having a fanatical desire to meet 'the Devil', as he refers to the cult's God.
  • Andrew DeSalvo is a seemingly nervous and cowardly middle-aged man who once worked monitoring the orphans at the Wish House, which was operated by the Silent Hill cult. He was a ruthless man, beating the children for misbehavior, including Walter, and often punishing them with imprisonment in the "water prison." It's suggested that DeSalvo was never a believer of the cult's faith, as he refers to their teachings as 'mumbo-jumbo'.
  • Richard Braintree is another of Henry's neighbors who is very interested in Henry's supposed disappearance. He loathes unruly behavior and desires only peace and order, and he forcibly works to get it, threatening people with his revolver. He's constantly monitoring the other tenants. When Walter was a child, trying to visit room 302, Richard yelled and threatened him, driving the boy away.
  • Joseph Schreiber was an investigative journalist who lived in Room 302 before Henry. Like Henry, strange things happened to Joseph before he disappeared entirely. In death, it became his duty as the Giver of Wisdom to pass along his knowledge of Walter, the room, and the 21 Sacraments to Henry, the Receiver of Wisdom. When you start Silent Hill 4, you most likely are playing as Joseph, because you say, "My apartment. Its covered in blood and rust." When you examine objects it says that they aren't yours, when they are. You also mention that your red typewriter is missing, but Henry doesn't have a typewriter. At the end of the game, the room looks like it did in the dream, but there is a red typewriter there with red notes Joseph wrote. One of the notes has what you said at the beginning on it, but then Joseph says, "Wait... what am I writing??"
  • Walter Sullivan was a boy who was born within Room 302 to unwilling parents, who left him to die inside the room. However, Frank Sunderland, the superintendent, found him in time and he was rushed to nearby St. Jerome's hospital to be nourished and cared for until being sent to the Wish House Orphanage to be raised. As a child, he often traveled to the South Ashfield Heights apartment building, to Room 302, which Walter thinks is his mother. Walter then proceeds with the 21 sacrements (or 21 murders) that'll bring his "mother" to life. Walter is also mentioned multiple times in the second game; in a newspaper article at the Woodside Apt at the bottom of the trash chute, and his grave is found in the graveyard beneath the labyrinth. For further information on Walter and his victims, see his own article.
  • Frank Sunderland is the superintendent of Henry's apartment building. Kept Walter's umbilical cord after his parents abandoned him when he was born. Although his role is somewhat small, there are many hints to suggest that he is James Sunderland's father. For example, at one point Henry mentions that Frank's son and daughter-in-law disappeared in Silent Hill a few years ago. Also, SH4 has many links from SH2, just like SH3 has links from SH1.

[edit] Minor characters (with names)

  • K. Gordon, T. Moore, L. Ranaldo. Members of the Midwich Elementary School faculty, named for three members of the band Sonic Youth. K. Gordon in particular was Alessa Gillespie's teacher. She suspected that Alessa was being abused at home and even considered consulting a lawyer on what could be done about it, but Alessa was obviously injured before K. Gordon could take any action. In order to continue after leaving the school in Silent Hill, Harry must pass through K. Gordon's house. There are a few broken plates and other debris all over her kitchen, which may be evidence of a violent confrontation with the Order. Silent Hill 1, Silent Hill 3
  • Lydia Findly, Trevor F. White, Albert Lords, Roberta T. Morgan, Edward C. Briggs. The names that appear on the "Grim Reaper's List" in Alchemilla Hospital, suggesting they all died there. Silent Hill 1
  • Officer Gucci. A police officer that died a very mysterious and suspicious death while investigating the drug-trafficking problem in Silent Hill. He has appeared in the Silent Hill (film), played by Kim Coates, in a subplot involving Rose's husband. Silent Hill 1
  • Leonard Rhine. The writer of a book entitled 'The Monster Lurks' which deals with adolescents and their inner fears. Silent Hill 1
  • Coroner Seals. The one who investigated about officer Gucci's death. Silent Hill 1
  • Norman Young. The manager of a motel near the lake. He is involved in the cult-related drug-trafficking in Silent Hill. Silent Hill 1.
  • Andy A young boy who lives next door to Harry and Cheryl Mason. He was brought to Silent Hill by the Masons when he hid in the back of Harry's car. Silent Hill: Play Novel
  • The Orosco Family. The parents and brother of Angela Orosco. Thomas Orosco, a lumberjack, Angela's father, raped and beat his daughter while the unnamed mother and brother did nothing to stop it. Silent Hill 2
  • Jack Davis, Joshua Lewis, Joseph Barkin. Patients at Brookhaven Hospital who each suffer from issues similar to those of the main characters. Silent Hill 2
  • Amy Baldwin. Ernest's daughter. She went to hide a present (a pair of gloves) for her father's birthday in the attic of their home. Her death was caused by a fall from the attic window. Her father tried resurrecting her using the "Ceremony of the Resurrection of the Dead" ever since. Silent Hill 2
  • Louise Barkin. Daughter of Joseph Barkin. She committed suicide and the father felt responsible for the incident. He became so obsessed that he kept a piece of his daughter's hair heavily locked inside a blue box. Silent Hill 2
  • Henry, Mildred, Scott. People who might have lived in the Woodside apt buildings. Silent Hill 2
  • Roger Widmark. The editor of the Silent Hill sightseeing brochure. Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill 3

  • Allen Smith. A painter who made the absent painting 'Waterfront Landscape'. Silent Hill 2
  • Miriam K.. A "traitor" buried in the peculiar graveyard beneath the labyrinth. Since the release of Silent Hill 4, it is thought that it may be the grave of Miriam Locane. Silent Hill 2
  • Nurse Rachel. The one who took care of Mary's health and Laura. It is also quite possible for her to be the same nurse that lives in room 106 of the South Ashfield Heights. Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill 4
  • Stanley Coleman. A patient at Brookhaven Hospital who was committed for obsessively stalking women, occasionally to the point of violence. He is disturbingly fixated on Heather. He leaves her dolls with eerie notes for her to find, each proclaiming his undying love for her. Because he never reveals himself and can seemingly move from room to room undetected, it is unknown if he is still human. As Heather repeatedly leaves the doll where it lies, Stanley's notes become more fevered. Fortunately for Heather, she receives a call in the otherworld hospital mentioning that Stanley is "underground", and his new name is #7 (Leonard Wolf kills him off-screen). Later on in the basement, Heather walks by a blood-soaked gurney with a number 7 on it, and a mangled voice whispers her name. There is some player speculation that Stanley Coleman and Alessa once knew each other. This has not been confirmed by Konami. Silent Hill 3
  • Joe and Jaime. Two sewer workers who got killed by the 'monster in the water'. Silent Hill 3
  • Mr Smith. A Silent Hill neighbor of the Wish/Hope House who got shortly concerned about the children crying coming from the orphanage. Silent Hill 3, Silent Hill 4
  • Dr Midkiff A man who worked in the Brookhaven Hospital and was asked to go cautious on Leonard Wolf. Silent Hill 3
  • R Crosby. The one who complained about Leonard's behavior that he was trying to convert others into his faith. Silent Hill 3
  • St Nicholas. Known as the doctor of God. Silent Hill 3
  • LS An anonymous cult member that complaints about Vincent's way of using the cult's money for his own benefits. Silent Hill 3
  • Danny. A dead man of the haunted mansion who came from New Orleans. Silent Hill 3
  • Mike. A pervert living in room 301 of S.A. Heights. He got a porno magazine from Joseph Schreiber and turned around nurse Rachel to whom he sent love letters. Sadly for him, Braintree will 'skin' him one day during a bad mood. Silent Hill 4
  • Bob. Was an orphan of the Wish House organization and Walter's friend. One day, he suddenly disappears. Walter suspected Andrew DeSalvo for killing him. Silent Hill 4
  • John. Another orphan who wound up in the water prison. Silent Hill 4

[edit] Minor characters (nameless)

  • The Mayor Though unnamed, the mayor of Silent Hill, notorious for his mission to put an end to the drug-trafficking in Silent Hill, died mysteriously around the same time as Officer Gucci. Silent Hill 1
  • Mrs. Mason. Harry's wife. She found Cheryl with her husband while visiting Silent Hill. She died of a disease four years after. Her first name was never revealed by Konami, though it is often presumed to be Cheryl, with their adopted daughter named after her. Silent Hill 1
  • The Cult Doctors. Two doctors (one with what sounds like a Hispanic accent) are present with Dahlia and Kaufmann in the Aratron room (Nowhere). Little is known about them except that they might be/have been part of the Silent Hill cult. Silent Hill 1
  • The Radio Voice/Gameshow Host. A mysterious voice heard on James' broken radio in the elevator at Brookhaven Hospital. This voice sounds like the host of an old game show, and even more mysteriously, has what sounds like an audience of a few dozen people in the background. He gives James the optional "Trick or Treat" quiz. If the quiz is answered correctly, James uncovers a cache of health drinks and ammo. If it is answered incorrectly, a cloud of toxic smoke does damage to him. The origin of this character is never explained, and it is one of the most prolific mysteries of the second game. Silent Hill 2
  • Mary's Doctor. In the hotel, James remembers a doctor informing him about Mary's incurable disease. The doctor speaks in a rather flat, unemotional tone as he tells James that Mary is dying, and it is unknown whether this was simply poor acting or a deliberate attempt to make the doctor seem callous in the face of James and Mary's tragedy. Silent Hill 2
  • Prisoner C-221 Number of a prisoner that was locked in Toluca Prison, a former prison used in the 19th Century. In one of the jail cells, sounds can be heard sulking in one of the cells. It might be this prisoner or not. (As well, James will aim his gun at him as if he were an enemy, but not only does the camera prevents the player from seeing into the cell, but if a camerahack program is used, it is revealed that the creature is invisible, and the cell in question is completely empty.) Silent Hill 2
  • The Happy Birthday Man. In the alternate version of the Brookhaven hospital, Heather receives an anonymous call wishing her 31st and 24th happy birthday. A lot of speculation turns around the identity of this man. Some claim it is Leonard Wolf or Stanley Coleman although the man affirms he is none of the two. Other theories go by Vincent, Claudia and even Douglas. The most popular one concerns the director of Brookhaven Hospital. Silent Hill 3
  • Borley Haunted Mansion Guide. The very ironic guide of the haunted mansion. Like the radio voice mentioned above, this appears to be the voice of some sort of spectral, sinister force that takes glee in the suffering of the protagonist. Silent Hill 3
  • The Crying Woman. A woman pleading for forgiveness for her sins to God in the chapel. About her identity, fans speculate around Dahlia Gillespie and Claudia Wolf. Silent Hill 3
  • Cult Member. A member that talks to Vincent in a tape about the cult and Alessa being found. Silent Hill 3
  • Radio Announcers. A newsman and woman talking about the weather, Silent Hill, a baby walrus, a man publicly urinating, and murder cases - including Walter's. Silent Hill 4
  • Captain and Cop. Two police officers from Ashfield investigating about the deaths of Cynthia and Richard and so as Eileen's injuries. They're familiar with the Walter Sullivan case. Silent Hill 4
  • Operator. Informs Henry about the phone number shifting of the Ashfield bar. Silent Hill 4

[edit] South Ashfield Neighbors

  • Room 101: Gun Maniac. Has replicas of many fire weapons. Allergic to cats.
  • Room 102: Cat Lady. Lonely woman living with a lot of cats. One of her pets got killed by the gun maniac. After witnessing Mike being beaten by Richard, she took his jeans to wrap the cat's body.
  • Room 105: Frank Sunderland. South Ashfield Height's superintendent and thought Mike from 301 is Rachel's boyfriend. See Silent Hill 4 characters section. Believed to be the father of James Sunderland (Silent Hill 2)
  • Room 106: Nurse Rachel. She's stalked by Mike. See above. Possible relations to Silent Hill 2 as Mary's Nurse.
  • Room 107: Music Listener. Listens to great music but lives under Richard Braintree.
  • Room 202: The Painter. Rachel's true boyfriend. He painted all his neighbors except Henry and Eileen.
  • Room 203: The Drunk Man. His room is filled with bottles. Also witnessed Mike's beating and took his shirt for an unknown reason.
  • Room 204: Plump Woman. Likes cooking.
  • Room 205: Player Man. Plays a lot of videogames. His room suggests also he does some bodybuilding. He recorded Mike being beaten by Richard.
  • Room 206: The Family. A couple living with eight or ten children.
  • Room 207: Richard Braintree. Beat Mike because they had a collision in the hallway while Braintree was in a bad mood. See Silent Hill 4 characters section.
  • Room 301: Mike. See above.
  • Room 302: Henry Townshend. See Silent Hill 4 characters section.
  • Room 303: Eileen Galvin. See Silent Hill 4 characters section.
  • Room 304: Old Couple. Whereabouts unknown.

[edit] Unusual Characters

  • The Aliens. They appear in the UFO Ending as a comic relief where they have the habit to zap the protagonist or Silent Hill itself. Silent Hill 1,2,3
  • Mira. The Dog from the dog ending who plays a hoax on James. Silent Hill 2.
  • Fairy Queen. Secret character that seeks honesty. Silent Hill 3
  • Robbie the Rabbit. Lakeside Amusement Park mascot. A large, pink rabbit, usually presented with a mouth stained with blood. Silent Hill 3,4.
  • Princess Heart Magical Sailor Moon-style princess warrior that Heather can transform into, complete with henshin sequence. Silent Hill 3

[edit] Silent Hill Film

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Note: Though it exists outside the continuity of the game series, many of the characters in the film are interpretations of game characters.

  • Rose DaSilva, played by Radha Mitchell.
  • Christopher DaSilva, played by Sean Bean.
  • Sharon DaSilva, played by Jodelle Ferland.
  • Cybil Bennett, played by Laurie Holden.
  • Dahlia Gillespie, played by Deborah Kara Unger, is a former member of the Order who, after the failed sacrifice of her beloved daughter, has descended into madness. Regardless of her mental state, Dahlia's concern for her daughter leads her to try and protect Sharon from the Order's agents. In the end, Dahlia is left alive, but forever trapped in Silent Hill.
  • Thomas Gucci, played by Kim Coates, is a jaded police detective from Brahams who is investigating the disappearance of Cybil, Rose and Sharon. Though he humours Christopher's desire to search for his wife and child, he ultimately has little desire to explore the town of Silent Hill. As a young man, he found the injured Alessa and took her to the hospital, burning his hands in the process.
  • Christabella, played by Alice Krige, is the leader of the small group of Order refugees living in their old church. It was Christabella that orchestrated the sacrifice of Alessa Gillespie and after the darkness took over the town, created the only safe haven within. In the end, Christabella fell to Alessa's horrible revenge.
  • Pyramid Head, a hooded figure who stalks the town to find and kill the members of Christabella's sect. (Whether it is under Dahlia's or Alessa's command is sometimes disputed. In one scene, when Dahlia was threatened by Order member Anna, the Red Pyramid appeared and executed her. This can be interpreted either as Dahlia directly summoning it, or Alessa doing so to protect her mother.)
  • Alessa Gillespie.
  • Unnamed Nurse (Quite Possibly Lisa Garland) This is the attending nurse to Alessa in the hospital. Her dress and role seems similar to Lisa Garland from the first Silent Hill game. Her presence may simply be a nod to fans of the game.
